A move upward from Acer's entry-level TravelMate 240 series yet not so powerful or miniaturized as to be inordinately pricey, Acer's TravelMate 250 series of portable PCs is a smart option for those who need solid performance but can't afford a true high-end notebook. This particular model, the TravelMate 250 TM252ELCi, is just one down from the top-of-the-line TravelMate 250, the TM254ELCi, and as such sports perks such as wireless connectivity and a fast processor, but minimal memory.
Sporting a potent 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor but just 256 MB RAM memory, the TravelMate 250 TM252ELCi delivers plenty of raw power but will slow considerably in demanding computer sessions and especially during instances of heavy-duty multitasking. Nevertheless, it will have little trouble running most personal, home office, business and mobile 2D applications. The system's graphics controller, an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, will efficiently display older and less complex 3D games and 3D design programs, but doesn't have enough muscle for the current breed of high-end 3D games.
Measuring 13.1 by 11.6 by 1.6 inches and weighing 7.4 lbs, the TravelMate 250 TM252ELCi is of average size and weight -- not so small that you can fit in a purse, yet not so large that it isn't comfortably portable. At 40 GB, the system's hard disk is satisfactory for storing a flock of applications and files but not spacious enough for those who also want to maintain a large multimedia library. The enclosed DVD/CD-RW drive will allow you to burn audio files to CD, archive data and watch DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. One more advantage of the TravelMate 250 series over the majority of TravelMate 240 models is its slightly larger display, a bright 15-inch XGA TFT viewing screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolutions.
Connectivity options are quite reasonable. To help you communicate with the outside world, Acer has installed a standard 56K dial-up modem, a high-speed 10/100 LAN connection for fast network interaction, and an 802.11b Acer InviLink wireless LAN for those times when you just can't plug in. Other key amenities include four fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an 84-key keyboard with programmable touchpad, and support for simultaneous displays on the notebook screen and an external monitor. A FireWire port, normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders, is not part of the package, though Acer has added FIR (fast infrared) technology for cordless communication with FIR-equipped gadgets such as PDAs.
Under ideal conditions, battery life expectancy is average at 2.5 hours.
