Product Description

Dragnet starring Jack Webb.
14 thirty-minutes episodes on 2 DVDs.

"The story you are about to see is true, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent." So began the familiar opening to TV's long-running police drama, Dragnet. TV's favorite copy, Sgt. Joe Friday, solved crimes in this popular series from 1951-1959. The show's realistic portrayal of true cases drawn from the files of an actual police department make it all the more exciting when justice is served in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the facts!!, August 1, 2004
I bought this DVD set and was very impressed with the quality of the picture and sound. On disk #2, "The Big September Man" there are cigarette commercials included in the episode! Watch for guest appearances by Carolyn Jones and a very young Leonard Nimoy. I'm a big fan of Jack Webb and I highly recommend this to fans of his work. Even if you don't like Jack's work. This is a rare look at televisions earliest offerings. I sincerely hope that AMC can release more of these.

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective Disc 1, January 9, 2005

I bought this DVD "AMC TV - Dragnet" expecting the quality to be excellent, and it was for disc 2. However, disc #1 had only three episodes on it when it should have had seven!

My second replacement copy was also defective. Buyer beware!

I am certain this is a manufacturing error that might eventually be corrected in the next batch, but until then be forewared that although disc #1 is screen printed as if it is from AMC, in reality when you play it it shows an entirely different manufacturer and has only 3 episodes instead of the 7 it should have - the quality is also not very good on the defective disc either. The quality on disc 2 is very good and if they ever fix this situation I would expect that the corrected disc #1 would also be of the same high quality.

Good luck if you order this set!

3.0 out of 5 stars the story of your police force in action, March 12, 2006

(REAL NAME)
I had never seen the original, 1951 version of Dragnet before, so I was happy to see it was available in DVD. However, I was annoyed to find that the original title and credits music had been excised and some dopey, synthesized knockoff music inserted. I'm guessing there were copyright issues or maybe the original music had been replaced when the shows were re-aired as "Badge 714," but it would have been better to take a more archival approach, and leave the soundtrack as it was found. I had hoped to see Barton Yarborough as Friday's original partner, Ben Romero, but I have since learned that he only did one or two episodes before his untimely death, and only the very first episode is available for purchase anywhere, and not on DVD. All in all, a good sampling of one of the greatest shows in TV history, but no extras and you have to go some to get over that stupid music. (I just press MUTE and hum the Dragnet theme to myself.)
