5.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return From The Chill Out Goddess!, May 22, 2004
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
There aren't many musicians who can release a debut album and go on to become of the biggest superstars of the past decade in the space of a year. Norah Jones is clearly an exception to the rule. Her debut album "Come Away With Me" was released in the spring of 2002 and went no where for about a year. Few critics even knew it was on shelves and only a handful of music industry insiders knew her name. This all changed when the hype began to build and in February 2004, Norah Jones picked up a staggering 8 Grammy awards for the album - a record for a female artist. Suddenly Norah was big news and the album gradually ascended to the No.1 spot all over the world; suddenly jazz was cool; suddenly America had a new idol; suddenly, people began to wonder how such a young lady could make such simple music and break all the records and rules...

The album has since topped the charts in both the US and UK and just been certified for US sales of 9 million copies. Worldwide sales stand at 18 million and despite this success, Norah has many critics. Some can't believe her international fame and believe her as nothing more than a jazz/country wannabe with hardly anything to show for it. How wrong they are! Norah's voice is amazingly powerful and extremely soulful. She's chilled out and cool and people can listen to her music easily which is why she appeals to a phenomenally vast market. She also happens to be stunning in appearance, and that always helps. Come Away With Me is now a classic in modern music, a landmark of the times and is still going strong selling hundreds of thousands of copies around the world, with no sign of slowing down!

Norah's latest album, "Feels Like Home," was one of the most anticipated in recent years and sold a staggering 1 million copies in its first week in American alone. It is now officially the second fastest-selling female album in terms of first-week sales, after Britney's "Oops!...I Did It Again" from May 2000. The album has been certified for sales of 4 million in the US after just three months and it shows no signs of slowing down. This album will be in the Top 40 all year!

The first single that was taken from this sophomore album was the brilliant "Sunrise." This song opened the album and is a song that truly matched its title. It opens gently with a soft guitar and a piano, before Norah sings, "Sunrise, sunrise. Looks like morning in your eyes. But the clocks held 9:15 for hours. Sunrise, sunrise. Couldn't tempt us if it tried. Cuz the afternoon's already come and gone." Norah then sings the chorus, "And I said Oooo, oooo, oooo. To you." Norah then sings the second verse, "Surprise, surprise. Couldn't find it in your eyes. But I'm sure it's written all over my face. Surprise, surprise. Never something I could hide. When I see we made it through another day." Norah then sings the chorus once more, before making way for a gorgeous instrumental, as is usually the case with her songs.

After this melodic bliss, Norah picks up the song again and sings, "And now the night. Will throw its cover down on me again And if I'm right. It's the only way to bring me back." Norah then sings that harmonized chorus twice more than will have millions of fans "Ooo"-ing! The song on the whole follows much of the same pattern as the material from Come Away With Me, but this is by no means a bad thing; heck, it's to be expected! Why mess with a multi-million selling formula?!

The video to Sunrise is rather, erm, strange. We see Norah with her band (The Handsome Band) in a little hut in a field at day and then at night. The men play instruments as Norah fishes with a female friend - it is so strange! Everything is fake and exaggerated and filled with artifical colours. The owls are hilarious and Norah's little dance is funny too, but beneath all that, you realise something within yourself: that this is a woman that you secretly love deep down. You only have to look at her! She is simply beautiful, and she seems like a really nice person too. The world is in love with Norah Jones, people! This song proves it. Buy it now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm?!, December 7, 2004
This song was very interesting! But the video was very confusing. Although I was lost a little with the whole concept of the video, it was different and that made it eye-catching.
