Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

For Paulina Rubio, making music is all about combining the best and most unlikely of styles into one high-energy pop package. The fusion worked well on her last two albums: 2000's Paulina and 2002's English-language Border Girl, both of which were highlighted by the fiery ranchera hip-hop "El Ultimo Adios"/"The Last Goodbye." Pau-Latina doesn't feature anything quite as brilliant, but it still showcases Rubio's effortless blending of sounds. Flamenco guitar flourishes are sprinkled throughout the album's 13 vocal tracks, which veer from pulsing club beats ("Algo Tienes") to regetton rhythms (the cutesy "Perros") and rock guitar licks ("Te Quise Tanto"). Hitmaker Emilio Estefan contributes "Dame Otro Tequila," a rousing drinking song of sorts; and Marco Antonio Solis delivers "Ojala," a deftly fused sing-along in the vein of Rubio's aforementioned classic, "El Ultimo Adios." The songs are lushly produced, anchored by Rubio's throaty vocal delivery and impressive musical instrumentation. Save for a pair of wistful ballads, the energy rarely dwindles on Pau-Latina, and that's probably just the way she likes it.--Joey Guerra

5.0 out of 5 stars She's amazing., February 14, 2004
I heard Paulina for the first time 3 years ago in Italy. They were playing frequently "Lo hare por ti", I liked the song very much and bought the album and I found it intresting. Then I heard her music again in France when her "The one you love" single came out and bought "Border Girl". I was lucky to see her live when she sang with Enrique Iglesias and she simply rocked.
So finally an american friend came to visit me some days ago and brought some new cd's including "Paulatina" and I think that this one is her best cd so far. So now I'm here in Amazon ready to order it because I went to Fnac and it's on pre-order.
So people really trust me this is a very good singer. maybe her voice is not as Christina's but she sings very good. She's full of energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars AS TO THE LOGICAL PROBLEM..., October 23, 2004
I do not think it is "logical" to be biased. What kabalacci wrote is a real biased statement that does not make sense at all. I think Paulina's PAU-LATINA has been a success (I do not say it but BILLBOARD does -Te Quise Tanto 12 weeks number one and the album over 15 weeks number 1- Algo Tienes has been credited gold and Dame Otro Tequila is the greatest winner according to R&R magazine). thalia has tried to copy Marilyn Monroe and others and J.LO doesn't sing but the featured rappers do. (...).
Paulina has reached to where she is at FOR HERSELF and own effort. She hasn't had to make soap operas or marry old rich man to make her name known. Due to my traveling around the world, and as a someone who works for the music industry, Paulina is a very strong name. Border Girl could have been better but the follow up English album will have America talking about it (Invisible Number is to be the first single).
The formula for Paulina's success is the fact that she (like Madonna) never repeats the same things (as fomer EMI label would oblige her before). Now Paulina works with different people all the time and that what makes of his music catalog something fresh, catchy and deep.
Pau-Latina summarizes what Paulina is all about: a border girl who is strong enough to mix ranchera with hip hop and flamenco with electri guitars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Pop Perfection, Exceeding Language Barriers, February 16, 2005
This album has been available for a year now, but one listen to the vibrant sounds that pulsate and groove on "Pau-Latina," married with her inspired vocals and undeniable talent, proves Paulina Rubio has created an album that maintains dignity with age; a feat that is hard to accomplish with straight-edged pop.

The rapturous "Te Quise Tanto" still hits the taste buds with a loud bang, as does the sexy, frantic "Algo Tienes," which reached #4 on the Top Latin Singles chart. So too does the set's rivaled highlight, the triumphant "Dame Otro Tequila," an ever-catchy kiss-off to those who bring us negativity in our lives which reached #1 on the Top Latin Singles chart along with "Te Quise Tanto."

Listeners who've known this material for a year and those who are yet to wisely listen to it will find it absolutely impossible to get through this album without listening to a handful of songs repeatedly before switching to another disc; the material is extremely solid. From the likes of the funky ranchera of "Ojala" to the indescribably gorgeous cinematic ballads "Amor Secreto" and "Volveras" to the encouraging "follow your dreams anthem" of "Alma En Libertad" to the festive bi-culturality of "My Friend, Mi Amigo," the albums highlights appear unceasing, and that is pretty much exactly the way it is.

A virtual catalyst for the dictionary definiton of ear candy, the disc is so superb it is most likely that Paulina will never record an album of such high quality and caliber again in her career; to even reach such a height a second time will be pure astonishment.

With powerful, ever-changing song structures that never cease to entertain, encourage, empower and enthrall, "Pau-Latina" is an unceasingly pleasing recording on which every song has what it takes to become a hit single. For all the musical enjoyment it gives, it pays for itself many times over.

Her hip-hop influenced sophomore English album awaits release later this year.
