5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for Jack Ingram newcomers!, March 31, 2004
By Red Raider 97 (Wolfforth, TX United States) - See all my reviews
As a longtime fan, I am happy to see these songs available again since many people have been deprived of some of his very best work. This album is a compilation of his first two self-produced indie CD's: self-titled (still my personal favorite) and Lonsome Questions, both of which are out of print. If you are lucky enough to have them, then there isn't anything new here. If you don't have them, get this CD!

If you don't know who Jack Ingram is, then this is the perfect album to start your collection. Jack has a great voice and superb songwriting abilities. Fans of David Gray, Ryan Adams, and John Mayer who may not be familiar with Texas singer/songwriters will love this CD. Follow it up with "Hey You" and "Electric", both of which get progressively more southern rock and honky-tonk influenced.

These are songs written while Jack was a student at Southern Methodist University, touring college bars across the state of Texas, and playing a weekly gig at Adair's Saloon. Songs such as "A Song for Amy" (his first love song), "Make My Heart Flutter", and "Things Get Cloudy" reflect newfound emotions that are explored again as relationships develop on the later "Hey You" album. (Jack fans--check out the live "Acoustic Motel" CD from his website for some great stories about many of his songs!)

There are beautiful, hearfelt, moving ballads as well as driving honky-tonk tunes on this album that give a great glimpse of where this awesome singer-songwriter came from, and where he is still headed.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it 5 stars but, May 4, 2007
By D. Pitts (Urbana, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'd hate to disrespect his more recent songs. The most interesting aspect of this abum is studying early genius in formation. Jack has emerged as the most formidable male writer and stylist on the alt-country scene (really, the whole damn country scene), and its really fun to study his younger efforts. In concert he's incredible, and he's able to transfer this to the cd medium. If you like his edgy style and lyrics, this cd is a great addition. I'm really glad he decided to release it.
