3.0 out of 5 stars Empezabas a perder suelo, Cerati, October 28, 2004

4.0 out of 5 stars Ex-Soda Stereo Goes Symphonic, April 30, 2004
Gustavo Cerati was part of Argentina's Soda Stereo, one of the most popular and forward-looking pop-rock ensembles in Latin rock. Cerati's silky tenor has been featured in four excellent pop albums recorded since the demise of SS during the 90's ("Bocanada", "Amor Amarillo", "Siempre es Hoy", and his superb collaboration with Daniel Melero, "Colores Santos"). This DVD serves as a souvenir of Cerati's artistic engagement along with a symphonic orchestra, reprising a well-thought out selection of songs from his solo career as well as some Soda favorites. Standout arrangements include "Un Millón de Años Luz" and the opening salvo, "Canción Animal". Although the shot-on-video direction lacks in imagination, the sound, mixed in 5.1 surround, is superb, placing the listener right in the director's position. You cannot go wrong with this title, which avoids the muzak direction and rearranges the songs as true symphonic pieces. Close to a masterpiece...

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting experiment documented, July 25, 2005
By Raul A. Suarez Giacoman "Alex G" (Mc Allen, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A few months after the release of this album, Cerati finally releases the video companion to his classical masterpiece. The cover and design of this DVD is basically the same as the audio CD, with the only difference of a silver carton case that is not collectible at all.

The same eleven tracks from the album are presented here. The scenario in which he performs does not provide anything visually attractive at all, his outfit is the only visual point on stage and believe me: that is not enough for a whole concert. There is also a funny moment in which for `A merced' they bring a very stylish chair for him to sit while the orchestra performs this instrumental version of the song. The direction could definitely have been better, if you don't have a very visual scenario to work on, you can at least try to be original on your shots, and that is not the case here.

Don't take me wrong, the concert is excellent and I rate it with 5 stars, I don't try to diminish the merit of the music at all, I only believe this DVD could have been a lot better if thought well when recorded.

The concert opens with `Cancion animal', accordingly to the instrumentation, Cerati sings calmly and with style, the musical arrangements for each one of the songs are very impressive and they match the arrogance with which he sings. The vocal level Gustavo achieves in many of the tracks is at the level of the music. An important thing to emphasize is how well the music from these songs fits in the classical style, besides having the superb arrangements they have, the songs somehow have that rhythm and that classical feeling.

Besides of the concert, the DVD is loaded with extra materials, some of them very interesting and collectible. You can see 3 tracks from the concert in different angles ("Corazon delator', `Persiana americana' and `Signos') which adds an extra value to the concert. A documentary that goes from the conception of the idea to the realization of the project is here, perhaps not to well realized but very informative indeed. The highlight of the extras are four added `episodes', the DVD includes the audio of the first demo recorded for the project (`Pasos', which is basically the same song we have heard with the symphonic arrangement dubbed over it) and three live performances that are worth the buying of the DVD, `Fue', `Lisa' and `Hombre al agua'. Why the video is not shown is something I'd like to know, the three bonus episodes are unbelievably well recorded and the versions are stunning!

Like I wrote on another review, this is an obligatory piece of collection for any Soda Stereo and Gustavo Cerati fan, I was personally disappointed a little bit as the video quality is not so good and the concert offers nothing of a visual spectacle; however, the sound mixed in 5.1 surround sounds great, as told in the documentaries, it was recorded so you could feel as if you were placed in the director's position.

Bottom-line, it could have been better, but the music, the idea, Cerati's presence on stage and the extras added to the DVD are worth buying it as a perfect complement for your audio CD.
