5.0 out of 5 stars Blessed Beyond Belief, June 3, 2005
By Brad C. Bradford (New Orleans, LA) - See all my reviews

Gary mays & Nu Era... God Bless You!! I have your first project and the CD is Great. I saw you peform in Houston for the NABJ regional conference and to all who read this review, when I tell you God came and took a seat...the anointing was heavy. What made me come to amazon.com is because a while back I lost the cd's jewel case and I decided to play #8-Nu Creature on the air.(I am also a jock for Praise 94.9 Fm, in New Orleans, LA)Least to say I got a lost of good responses. But I personally would like to say thank you because I have been blessed by your cd and am still being blessed. I am trying to figure out why you are not out and on the scenes..what do I mean? I mean like being nominated for a stellar???? I just encourage you to keep up the GOOD WORK! God is elevating you and the group. I would like to get you down to New Orleans for a concert or something..give me a holla -----cleveland@hotmail.com(make sure I can tell the message is from you)
God Bless you and Nu Era..From Brad Bradford and the Praise 94.9 Fm family.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it!, October 6, 2004
By Dawn Chambray (Michigan, United States) - See all my reviews
Yeah he does mimick Kirk Franklin on this cd but Kirk also does some switching up in his music styles. This album is straight contemporary gospel. The beats are tight and every song on the album would be great to use for christian airplay not just gospel. Gary Mayes is kind of like a blend of Kirk Franklin and Brent Jones who both by the way crossed over and get airplay on major christian stations. You may have to listen to it a couple of times though to actually figure out what he's saying in some of the songs. But the beats will grab your attention right away.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good songs but...., August 13, 2004
By C. Pompey "c-nice" (Charlotte, NC United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'll start this review by saying that I hope Gary Mayes reads his reviews from people who purchase his music. I will say that many of the songs on this album are great to listen to. The leader's are top notch and the production is good as well. The musicianship is admirable. I must say that I could have enjoyed the CD more. I found myself trying to listen to many of the songs, but found myself extremely annoyed. Here's why: He's either going to narrate the song or let the leader lead the song. All of this narrating and talking over the leader is extremely, extremely annoying. Most of the time you can't understand what he is saying and it just sounds like a bunch of noise. You can tell he's from Houston, because he's on that Kirk Franklin vibe. Let Kirk be Kirk and let Gary be Gary. It just sounds like he was trying too hard to imitate Kirk and ended up just being a nuisance to many of the tracks on the album. That's sad, because many of tracks on the album are top notch. I will also say that many singers today focus too much on riffing and running instead of singing under the anointing, which is the case throughout most of this album. I mean the choir has finished a line of the chorus and the leader is still riffing. That's annoying as well. Being used to start-up projects, I know that there are a few flaws with most initial projects. This project is no different. I will say that I would have given the album at least four stars, but some of the leaders and the annoying Kirk Franklin impersonation took away from the overall experience. I give it a C. Next album, just let the leaders lead and don't talk over them. If you're going to narrate, then narrate and don't have a leader. Besides that, many of the songs are enjoyable and if you can make it past the talking and yelling over the track, then I would recommend this album. I would recommend you listen to it first. It will definitely remind you of Kirk Franklin.
