Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Learn a new language with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide, the Rosetta Stone Language Library teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before.

We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency.

Our complete set offers beginner through advanced instruction with over 8000 real-life images and phrases in 210 lessons. Levels I and II provide up to 550 hours of mastery instruction in listening comprehension, reading, and speaking. Systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. Previews, exercises, and tests accompany every lesson with automated tutorials throughout the program. Graphical speech recognition displays your voiceprint and compares it with the native speaker to help improve your pronunciation.

Some of the covered topics include:

  • Present, past, future
  • Professions and activities
  • Family relationships; people and talking
  • Descriptive adjectives; comparative nouns
  • Alone, crowd, friend
  • Directions: how do I get to . . .
  • Measurement: length, weight, volume, temperature, and distance
  • More advanced grammatical structures
  • Travel and transactions at a bank
  • Before and after in time and space
  • Political geography
  • A complete reference section of commonly used terms

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the Technically Challenged , November 21, 2004
What I like about this software is that it does not come with too many "gadgets." At my age, I am "technically challenged." So this software worked out fine for me with my limited computer skills. I also like the fact that this software covers Castilian Spanish. It is probably the only course available that exclusively covers Castilian Spanish in such depth since Pimsleur and Learning Like Crazy only offer Latin American Spanish courses.
The downside of this software is that you will not learn much Spanish grammar with it. If you want to learn the rules and mechanisms required to combine words and form sentences in Spanish, you will have to buy a good Spanish grammar book. For that I strongly recommend Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners by Avigail Azoulay, Arie Vicente. It is more expensive than other Spanish grammar books but it is well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, September 3, 2007
By J. Lind (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
We are a retired couple hoping to learn Spanish to make travel more enjoyable. Using Rosetta Stone you hear the words/phrases, see them written, and see a picture showing the word or action. You can speak the language and write it. It provides lots of review. We were afraid we would not have the self-discipline to use the program everyday. However, we are finding this not to be a problem. You can use it for short periods of time, or for longer if you want. My goal is to understand and make myself understood in Spain. My husband's goal is to become fluent (he took Spanish in high school and college, but never got fluent). Unlike "school" Spanish Rosetta Stone does not bog you down with grammar rules. Also, the speakers speak excellent Spanish, not with American accents as many of our teachers did. We think we can reach our goals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone Soainish (Spain) Level 1 & 2, September 6, 2007
By J. W. Rose (Florida) - See all my reviews
Superb learning tool for Spanish. Vocabulary and grammar are taught with logically sequenced written and spoken sentences corresponding to color photographs from everyday life scenes. A bonus is that my two and a half year old grandson delights in sitting beside me and pointing out "el gato" ... "el caballo" ... "el perro" and others.
