Boy, did I "outgrow" my Dell 15" flat panel. Yearning for something bigger, I started to look around at the larger sizes, starting at the 17" range. But wait, the prices of 19" flat panels have been cut in half since the beginning of the year, and now, thankfully, a 19" was easily within my budget for a new monitor.
To be honest, I was not very impressed with what I saw at the stores. Either the displays are not set up properly, or the stores only want to push Sony monitors which all looked better than all the other brands.
A few weeks back I got an email from Tigerdirect on their new Xerox 19" monitor for $449, which later dropped to $439. I liked the pictures and description, and it had specs that at least equaled most of the others. Even though I did not see this one in any store, I decided to "go for it".
The monitor arrived about 5 days later. Upon unpacking it, I found the display and arm attached together, and all that was needed to do was to screw in the metal base. Very easy. Then came setup time.
Since I was using DVI with my other monitor, I also used DVI with this one. NOTE: No DVI cable is supplied with this monitor. Only a VGA cable.
The monitor worked flawlessly connected to my Nvidia GeForce4 Mx440 Graphics card.
Out of the box, the computer's settings needed adjustment from the old 15" display settings.
The monitor's settings also needed to be calibrated, like a new television. There are a plethora of options you can use to adjust the brightness, contrast, color saturation, etc. I found that the display can be made much brighter than the out of the box setting.
The user manual came with an insert which states the contrast ratio is 600:1 instead of the box-stated 500:1. I can tell you that the blacks look real black on this unit.
After my own personal calibration, I must say that I am quite impressed. Colors are extemely vivid. Text is sharp. The screen is bright and evenly lit.
This monitor is not flashy or gimmicky looking. It screams out "I'm all business, now let's get working."
Now, while the graphics on this unit are impressive, there is a downside to this monitor. And that is the speakers. I tried it and they are quite awful. I immediately plugged my Altec Lansing speakers back into the computer. But I guess it's not too different from other monitor-grade speakers.
This monitor tilts up and down, but I have not tilted it yet. It appears you need to apply a good amount of force to move it. No problem, it is just fine being straight. It does not move up and down or swivel.
The build quality is very very good. Better than the Dell. This monitor is actually manufactured in conjunction with ProView.
After having it a few days, all I can say is that I am enjoying the monitor alot. Xerox picked a good unit to put its name on. For the $439 price, it is worth it.
