4.0 out of 5 stars Delorme Topo USA 7.0 - West Edition, February 8, 2008
Initially the interface was somewhat challenging, but after a few uses it became routine. Lots of very cool features and with both 2D and 3D views in a split screen, it was very helpful. I'd heard good things from other hunters regarding using this for Game Management Units (GMUs) in Colorado and was happy to see the first time I started it up the tips noted there were downloads available - one of which where the Colorado GMUs specifically!

Only issues so far:
1. Printed maps on inkjet are a bit fuzzy, better on laser - but either way even with the level of contour lines set to "High Detail" the fine lines are REALLY fine when printed out. Will look to navigate via the heavier lines I suppose.

2. While they (Delorme) have their own hardware device (PN-20) for direct compatibility of the maps in an ultra-portable solution - I've found options for creating maps in either Palm or Pocket PC formats... only to load them onto my Pocket PC and find there's not a recognized application included with this package or on the Pocket PC to actually open and view them. The only work around so far seems to be adding Bluetooth to my notebook PC so I can use the built-in GPS tab for navigating - not the most mobile solution after all.

Other than those two "bumps", the on-screen maps are great and, again, the 2D and 3D views along with the fly-overs are excellent!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great concept crippled by poor map data, March 5, 2009
By Kory Ball "kballs" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The app has neat features and capability (something previously only available with professional GIS products) such as all the different map layers for topo, nautical, streets, satellite photos, etc. The interface is a bit clunky, but it's functional.

BUT... the included topo map data is TERRIBLE. Comparing to some printed green trails maps I have, the Delorme maps have many missing or truncated dirt roads and trails (major/minor trails and access roads in national forests - such as in Olympic National Forest, and major county trail systems - such as Tiger/Cougar/Squak mountains in Issaquah WA, not exactly game trails here). This is a topo program! It's supposed to have FOREST ROADS AND TRAILS!

I feel ripped off because registration happened during install, so I can't take it back to the store (also I believe "opened" software can't be taken back).

Yes I could download USGS maps from their website (also poor in their own way - clunky old raster printed, dithered paper maps that were scanned in), but they are an absolute rip-off at $100 for a 20x20 mile area (would cost about $1 million to download USGS for the entire USA). The USGS maps also defeat the purpose of the Topo USA program (vector-based map data that scales nicely to all zoom levels).

For $50 for the west region, I could have subscribed to [...] for a year (and had unlimited access to USGS maps)... while it doesn't solve my desire for vector map data, it DOES have a community with tons of trail reviews and guides.

Hey, at least I didn't spend $300-500 on their PN-20/PN-40 GPS (with the cool multiple map layers capability for topo, nautical charts, and satellite photos) to find out their topo data is vastly incomplete. Maybe 10-15 years from now it will have the details it should have had (and by then it'll probably all be free on google maps).

New plan: Keep buying paper green trails/etc. maps at the local ranger station, use [...] and/or hiking/travel books for trail information (to plan hikes before you go).

3.0 out of 5 stars Topo USA 7.0, October 9, 2008
I wish I had known what the graphics looked like before I bought this. When zoomed in, the topo lines are angular, not rounded. Lakes look like trapezoids. Hill tops have incorrect straight edges. The topo increments are at 50 feet instead of 20, so details about the land forms cannot be seen very well or at all.

It is possible to order from the company USGS maps in little sections, which look good on the screen, but print out too blurry to use for competitions.

The good aspects of the program is that they have helpful tech assistance, my GPS data can be transferred onto the map (I had to work with Garmin and DeLorme tech assistance to make it work), the 3D display is easy to use and interesting, the topo covers every state I would ever go to, and the navigating features work smoothly and are easy to use. If you do not need the fine details of a topo map, then it is useful, better than other programs that I have seen.
