Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Stay connected with your buddies while hiking on the trail, riding the ski lift, or exploring other locations within a 6-mile range with this pair of GMR635 two-way radios. Also ideal as a neighborhood watch tool and workplace aid, each radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS and 7 FRS) for communicating with friends or family. It's easy to browse for channels thanks to the channel scan feature, which looks for active signals while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given frequency. And talking on the radio couldn't be simpler--just hit the PTT button when you're ready to transmit. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain.

Additional features include a backlit LCD display with a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), a roger beep that indicates the end of a transmission, and your choice of five different call tones. The radios come with a single charging cradle that can accommodate both radios at once, two NiMH rechargeable battery packs, and two belt clips for efficient transport. The entire bundle is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box
Two GMR635 two-way radios, dual charging cradle with AC adapter, two rechargeable NiMH batteries, two belt clips, user's manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works in an ideal condition., September 29, 2004
By Woochun Park (Ithaca, NY) - See all my reviews

My house and school are located in each hill-side of a lake. So, I should go down and then up to go to school. I tried two different situations.

(1) The road is covered by trees: It works just around 1 mile range. After that, I lost signal.

(2) Between my home and school: Both of us went to outside and I stand where I am able to look at the school. My friend was on
the roof on fifth-story building. It worked about 5.5 miles range. We measured a direct distance on the map.

Uniden claim 6 miles and it doesn't seem to be a lie. But, 6 miles can only happen in the extremely-friendly condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Radio for the Price, January 24, 2005
By M. MIDDLETON "mike-cyndi" (Pepperell, MA United States) - See all my reviews

People who talk about having only 1 mile of range on their talkie don't really understand the way Radio Waves work. All GMRS and FRS radios are on the 462mhz band, what that means to the avg user is that it's pretty much line of site. If you can see the person you will be able to talk to them. Now you will be able to have about a mile or so of trees things like that in between you and the other person. If you have hills and valleys between you and the person you are trying to talk too, you will have problems hearing them if the hill or mountain is between you and them. At this frequency radio waves don't bend much at all, that's why it's going to be line of sight. Power will help somewhat a 1watt talkie won't have the range that a 3watt one has, but it's not going to be very much in terms of distance.

People who say this talkie or that talkie works better just by range aren't explaining what their test conditions are, so you have no idea what is between them and the other person. If you wanted to compare radios like this....you have to have other radios in the test also, you can't tell anything from just one set / brand of radios in this kind of test.

Simple rule for gmrs/frs radios, if you can see the general area the other person is you should be able to talk to them. If one of you is elevated your range will increase dramatically. That's why they put tv/radio towers on hills and mountains. One mile is typical range for almost all gmrs radios that are transmitting 500mw to 1watt. This same one watt would be just as good if you were 10 miles apart and able to see the area where the other person is.

It's not the wattage that is important, for gmrs radios, it's the feature set on each radio that should be the main draw to a particular radio, not just someone saying I can talk only 1 mile with this radio. Want to learn about radio waves and radios, this site will keep you busy for eons. www.qrz.com

5.0 out of 5 stars For my purposes, these are GREAT!, January 31, 2005
After extensive testing, the library where I work switched to these radios based on the price and features. We use about 20 of these to keep people in touch as they move all around a VERY large, two story building in a downtown urban environment. Because they are rechargable, we save a ton of money on batteries (our old radios went through a set every 2 weeks). As for clarity - we have a very strong signal no matter where we are in the library building or on the grounds (an entire city block). The concrete of the building doesn't even keep us from communicating via these radios.

Though I cannot comment on the claim that they will reach six miles (because we don't use them like that), I can say that we enjoy very clear voice conversations with no significant "interference" from outside radios. For our purposes these radios have been perfect!

On high power, (supposedly 6 mile range), this unit is good for a half mile. On low power, there is very little difference.
