Com Uma Forca! Nelly Knows How To Kick It..., September 26, 2004
When Nelly Furtado released her debut album "Whoa, Nelly!" in the fall of 2000, she quickly became one of the most talked-about and hyped female artists for years. The album sold 7 million copies worldwide and spawned the massive hit singles "I'm Like A Bird," "Turn Off The Light" and "...On The Radio." Even after all this success and the Grammy, Nelly still felt it was time to focus on her second album. Her world tour of 2001/2002 was a complete success and she was blessed in early 2003 when she announced she would be expecting her first child. She gave birth to the baby in late 2003 and named him Nevis. She was a 24 year old mother and international superstar with a highly-anticipated sophomore album in the pipeline. It was finally released in November 2003. It was called "Folklore," and to me, it's definitely one of the best albums I have ever bought in my life! There isn't a bad track on offer - they're all fantastic. Yeah, this album commands credibility, but there's nothing wrong with that. With music as brilliant as is on proud display here, you can't blame her for trying!
This high standard of music is representative of the album's third single "Forca." As a follow up to the amazing first two singles from the album, "Powerless (Say What You Want)" and "Try," this third single does actually fall short a little bit. Forca is a fun, peppy song with a cheery and positive atmosphere. It will definitely bring a smile to your face because it's one of those songs that you are drawn to. The song was the official theme to Euro 2004, because it's a song that promotes togetherness and going for the goals you set yourself in your life. I'm not a big fan of football - infact, I can't stand it! - but the guys were right in choosing Forca as the official anthem of the events! The song, however, flopped in the UK - only just entering the Top 40. Probably because England were beaten by Portugal!
The song opens with a calm and serene beat - the drums, the accordian, the stadium guitar and the bass all work in perfect sync with one another to create a fantastic intro. Nelly then starts singing the first verse, "It is the passion flowing right on through your veins, and it's the feeling like you're oh so glad you came. And is the moment you remember you're alive. It is the air you breathe, the element, the fire." The banjo that made Powerless (Say What You Want) so successful now starts playing in the background as Nelly continues singing the first verse, "It is that flower that you took the time to smell. It is the power that you know you got so well. It is the fear inside that you can overcome. This is the orchestra, the rhythm and the drum!" Nelly then starts singing the chorus, which is in Portuguese, but works wonderfully and is very catchy, "Com uma forca, com uma forca, com uma forca que ninguem pode parar (pode parar!) Com uma forca, com uma forca, com uma forca ningeum pode matar."
Nelly then starts singing the second verse as the beat picks up and really starts getting into the swing of things, "It is soundtrack of your every-flowing life. It is the wind beneath your feet that makes you fly. It is the beautiful game that you choose to play. When you step out into the world to start your day. You show your face and take it in and scream and pray. You're gonna win it for yourself and us today. It is the gold, the green, the yellow and the grey. The red and sweat and tears, the love you got. Hey!" Nelly then sings the chorus again, before the best part of the song arrives. Nelly chants "Forca!" four times and at this point you'll be waving your hands in the air! She then sings, "Closer to the sky. Closer way up high." Nelly then sings the chorus over and over again until the song ends. She also sings part of the first chorus over the top of the chorus, creating the perfect finish!
The video to Forca - I have to admit - isn't Nelly's best. She is basically just down an alley way, singing and dancing in a pink top! She's looking very sexy, as always - and of course there's all these people making a big pile to climb up a wall to reach a football that a young boy has lost! It's strange, but it fits in with the Euro 2004 theme perfectly. As far as best videos go, I'd have to either Powerless (Say What You Want) or Turn Off The Light are the best from Nelly. However, this ia superb song nevertheless - essential for Nelly fans to add to their collection!

Forca (Kick ass, Go for it), July 14, 2004
This song is awesome, and so is the video. All of Nelly Furtado's videos to date have been the most creative and beautiful videos I have ever seen. The song is unbelieveable, and has a good feel for playing soccer. Also pick up Nelly Furtado's 1st album "Whoa Nelly"(2000), because it is the most brilliant album EVER. "Folklore" is not far behind either. What are you waiting for, run to the store and purchase them now.

What an anthem!, June 6, 2006
This was the official song of Euro 2004, and although it flopped in the UK (it was released way too late over there well after England were eliminated), it was Nelly's biggest hit in most European countries, and was obviously a #1 in Portugal where it became Nelly's signature song and one of the most played songs on the radio that year. The song is beautiful, empowering and just too catchy for anyone to ignore.
