5.0 out of 5 stars This single is anything but [Stupid], June 26, 2004
By B. Son (Denver) - See all my reviews
The second single off of Sarah McLachlan's 2003 release of "Afterglow", "Stupid" proves to be yet another remarkable single.

The single itself is a great one, unlike "Fallen" singles only containing just radio edits and other songs.. this single has actual original remixes.

The tracks are as follows:
1. Stupid [Radio Edit] 3:25
2. Stupid [Hyper Remix] 7:55
3. World is on Fire [Junkie XL Club Mix] 12:23
4. Stupid [Video]

The radio edit version is straight from the album "Afterglow". A stupendous single, describing the situation where you fall in love with the wrong person. "A simpleton could see / that you're no good for me / but you're the only one I see.."

The Hyper Remix of "Stupid" is amazing to listen to. It starts off quiet building up with guitar riffs and drums and bass. The chorus offers a great guitar melody. It keeps going to a synthesized part of the song that only adds to the garage-type sounds of this mix. The vocals are limited as only the chorus is used, and no other parts. Still, it is a great mix to listen to.

The Junkie XL mix demonstrates why Junkie XL is such a great artist and remixer. From his garage/chill/club style of music as shown in his recent album, "Radio JXL", he turns his talent to "Stupid". Its leads into a hypnotic guitar melody that repeats itself. The vocals in this song is not limited to just the chorus as the Hyper remix, but uses more of the vocals of the original song. This 12-minute song proves itself to be must-listen. It catches the essence of the "World on Fire" and adds almost a dramatic, darker sense to the song. Using an array of synthesized beats and sounds, various guitars and pianos, it wraps the single up very nicely.

The video is the story of "Stupid". It goes through 3 different centuries or time periods, so do not let the first minute of the video throw you off. It starts somewhere in the Elizabeth period, then ends in modern day. Another bonus to this great single.

This single is something any person interested in mixes of Sarah McLachlan's songs to get, or if you just want to hear a different version of "Stupid" and "World on Fire", then this single is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Number 2 club hit!, August 25, 2004
By K. Eisenberger "dance music freak!" (Defiance, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews

This so far is the biggest hit for Sarah on Billboard's Club Play chart. The cd comes from Australia and the main buying point for it is the inclusion of the massive mix by Junkie XL for "World On Fire". This mix (12:24) is just beautiful from the Cure like guitar work to the thumping aggressive house beats to the lyrics and vocals of Sarah McLachlan everything works. Robert Smith would be proud. The cd is actually for "Stupid" and it comes in the original radio version (3:26) and Hyper remix(7:55) and they are more typical of what Sarah McLachlan does. Stunning stuff. Buy this cd for the remix of "World On Fire" and you won't be sorry. A++++

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep of my senses I know, March 27, 2005
By S. Bi "mr-independent" (San Jose(Davis) , Ca United States) - See all my reviews

This CD Single are tracks that are taken off of Sarah McLachlan's latest Album, Afterglow of 2003. Obviously, these are tracks that are promotional to help push further sales of that album, with remixes and video. I think this CD single is great.

1. Stupid 5/5: is one of my favorite tracks off of the album. The instrumentation is really deep as it is layered with a well orchestrated band. The lyrics are wonderful and the singing is very haunting. The song is about someone being stupid for have fallen for someone, when in the end, nothing would come out of it, knowingly. I do much recommend the Radio Edit of Stupid than the album version for some subtle tweaks and implementation. For example, certain instruments are emphasized, the vocal tracks is louder, and the back up vocals are more emphasized instead of the album version---for example in the bridge.
"Leave me here burning/in this desert without you..."

2. Stupid Hypermix 3/5: this is the only stupid remix that I am currently aware of. The remix is quite long and the vocals take a while to get to, but it's good in a sense of the synthesized sounds. The bass is great, and I've heard this song at several clubs. It's popular, but not as popular as the Silence remixes. In this version, all you really hear are the vocal tracks from the chorus.
"How stupid could I be?/A simpleton could see/That you're no good for me/"

3. World on Fire Junkie XL Remix 4/5: This is the much longer version of the ones heard on the radio. I really enjoy the percussion in this remix. The synthesized sounds are great, that create a very original and groovy beat. This is also a favorite at the clubs, but again, not as huge as Silence. This version, the vocals are taken from the whole song I would say. This remix is long, most clubs play the edit. I would still recommend this version.
"Hearts are worn in these dark ages/you're not alone in this story's pages/"

4. Stupid Video 5/5: I really enjoyed this music video. This video takes place from three different time periods. I'm not really sure as to how I would describe these three periods. The first one, is kind of the same time period as Mozart-Renaissance period-where men wear those white wigs, the second is a little more recent-around the 1800's kind of like the people from the village. The third is taken in the 60's period-the Brady bunch era. The story to the music video is that no matter what time period Sarah is in, she will repeatedly make the same mistakes, and fall and cheat on that one guy. Which goes along with the lyrics quite well.

I would recommend of this CD single to anyone who is a big fan of Sarah Mclachlan and must have her promotional releases. This would be great to add to your collection. But, if you're just starting to get to know Sarah and just interested in her work, I would recommend looking into her albums. If you want remixes, Sarah will be releasing a second REMIX Album sometime this year with new remixes and old from afterglow and other works off her other albums. Cheers.
