Product Description

Amazon.com

Power, power and more power! The 18-volt 1/2-inch hammer drill/driver's high-torque motor churns out an impressive 500 inch-pounds of torque—imagine the jobs it could tackle. We were surprised by how good it feels in hand, thanks, we think, to its neatly balanced design that places the handle toward the center of the tool. A nice touch is the ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws for a superb hold on your bit. And the all-metal, three-speed transmission is so innovative that DeWalt patented it. All we know is that this is one powerhouse of a hammer drill/driver, no matter what mode it's in. The DC385 recip saw's keyless blade clamp wins points in our book for fast blade changes. And talk about fast—with its one-inch stroke length, it runs at 2,900 strokes per minute. Like the drill, it's well balanced and feels good in hand. It's compact, lightweight and offers great cutline visibility through the pivoting shoe's open top. Plus, we like that the blade will reverse for flush and plunge cutting. The circular saw slices into 2x4s like butter, and you can always see your cut because the blade's on the left. Bevel cuts are no sweat; the saw's easy to adjust and the scale's clear. The grinder's hardworking with a nice three-position side handle. Kudos to DeWalt for the metal gear case and the longer life it'll give this grinder. We're not as impressed with the impact gun, despite its 0 to 3,000 impacts per minute and how smoothly it runs without any kickback—-it's just that we'd like to see it take more than ¼-inch hex shanks. Finally, the flashlight's neck is super flexible, shedding light in just about any direction for up to three hours. This is a great collection of tools, essential for the contractor and perfect for the skilled do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

5.0 out of 5 stars An "Impact Driver" is not an "Impact Wrench", November 8, 2004
By Alfa Male (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
Just wanted to correct a mistaken impression that affected M. Yates rating of this tool kit. He mistook the 'Impact Driver' included in the kit to be an 'Impact Wrench.'

Impact drivers are sophisticated power screw drivers that have a special clutch that converts the turning torque of the chuck to small, hammer-like 'impacts' when the drill senses that the screw is creating enough turning resistance to possibly cause the screwdriver bit to hop out of screw and screw up the screw head. They are usually fairly expensive ($200 and up) and are very effective in driving screws and other fasteners into dense materials without stripping the screw or bolt heads.

Impact wrenches, on the other hand, are way more powerful and usually more expensive. Air impact wrenches can have 400 to 500 and more ft. lbs. of torque. DeWalt's 18v cordless impact wrench has 300 ft. lbs. and costs $300.

Most people have never heard of impact drivers as a separate tool category, so M.Y.'s expectation of getting an impact wrench is pretty understandable. I would have made the same assumption a few months ago . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Tools for the outdoors, November 6, 2004
This cordless combo kit is the best in my book. Bought the kit at the time I had a cabin in a wooded area with no electric.
The circular was used to build much of the cabin 24'x24'.
I never thought a battery operated saw would ever be heavy-duty.
Well the whole kit was outstanding. As for the light, I did not need a light but it came with the kit, and guess what, this is the best little lights I have ever owned. This light is bright and seems ever lasting. The reciprocating saw is the best for tight corners and some quick firewood. These cordless tools have had contintuous work around my home as well. I just don't reach for the electric tools, I guess now after many years i just love cordless and I believe DeWalt is the best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Grinder and battery bad within' 90 days, December 13, 2005
On your own after 30 days with amazon. Dewalt refers you back to amazon. Will repair at service center...20 miles away (not how I wish to use my spare time on a $600 purchase). After 2 weeks returned to service center with bad battery. Overheard repair customer telling the service manager how "dewalts quality has gone down", the service manager verbally agreed. My issue has not been resolved through speaking with a dewalt rep. or the service center. Will purchase a different brand locally next time.
