3.0 out of 5 stars The Silent Hours speaks out. It's time., July 31, 2004
If there was one common thread throughout the 'Silent Hours', it's the psychadelic-drenched sound of The Doves, yet there's much more to the equation. This CD is also about emotional soundscapes, each song taking the listener on brief flights, from the solemn and introspective to a fast-paced whirlwind tour. Yet there is a Britpop sensibility to contrast the psychadelia and passionate vibes. The influences are subtle, from Coldplay's passionate serenades, the starry-eyed journeys of The Bends/OK Computer Radiohead, and Suede's 'Dog Man Star' surreal grandiosity. Speaking of Suede, there's a touch of Bernard Butler-type guitarwork, from a delicate touch, jaunty rolling riffs to glam grittiness. Overall this CD is sparkling, surreal, and spacey. It allows you to float for awhile, yet keeping you bound to the world of guitars. Slowdive meets The Doves, early Verve meets Gomez' last album, just enough to keep you earthbound.
