3.0 out of 5 stars Robotech FANS Need Only Apply, October 16, 2004
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Not a far reach from Battlecry, this game will only apeal to Robotech guru's. Once again this game is based on a character not from miniseries, but someone who fights along side with them. Without giving too much away, it is similar Battlecry's Jack without the attitude. Your character is silent throughout the game with exection of a few voiceover flashbacks.

The game is meant for fans of the series and not everone will understand what the story is trying to unfold. Fans will know what is going on from the start of the game, but it is disorienting due to the heavy battles that takes place. It is not necessary to follow the the story to play the game. The objectives are available in the pause menu.

Graphically I've seen better and worse. I believe the developers were trying to get away from cel shaded cartoony feel of Battlecry for a more realistic forboding enviroment. If this is what they were trying to do then they suceeded. The game takes a much more serious approach, cel shading would not have fit the mood. Due to the second major attack on earth's surface there isn't much to look at. What enviroment as far as forest and towns are ok. More detail seem to be put into the ships inner structure and you won't see much do to the fact that you'll need night vision scope inside the ships. The lighting effects are ok as well, nothing spectacular but not bad either. Overall graghics are above mediocracy but not by much.

The music fits the mood as well, very little upbeat toons as the developers once again try to maintain a serious tone thoughout the game. The voice acting is not horrid as some would lead you to believe, if anything it's done better than most due to the actors not over or under acting. No character sounds out of place as far as emotion or general conversation is involved. The gun firing and explosions all sound good as well. Once again just above average in sound department. Though the music is enjoyable for the most.

Gameplay is a mixed bag. Controls are easy to pick up on. Targeting is easy for protoculture based enemies with a lock on feature. Human enemies will be a little more difficult because you are forced to line up the shot. The camera allows switching from first to third with ease. First person allows for better targeting, third person for melee or up close encounters. The camera can and will put you in the first person if the area is small and in the middle of battle can be annoying. Closed area it is necessary to see behind your character and that problem will come up more than once. The bike is used mainly for transportation and is hardly used for battle. It is a little difficult to control at times due to the rough terain as well. Guardian mode allows boost straffing in all directions. Flight is not possible. Boost jumping allows for an extra foot or so of jumping height. Fighting the enemy runs smoothly, dodging shots and auto target feature makes this a better than average shooter. Other first person shooters could take lesson with the auto targeting system used here. No slow down present even with the screen littered with Invid troopers.

Robotech Invasion is not an underachieved game, but does not go out it's way to overachieve either. Die hard fans of Robotech will enjoy this game as I do, but everyone else may see this as just another shooter with transforming mecha gimick. The auto target feature stands out as this games stong point. It's lack of a broader appeal will hurt sales to non-fans of the cartoon.

3.0 out of 5 stars ROBOTECH: Invasion...Rent before you regret!, October 16, 2004
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
ROBOTECH: Invasion is a far shot from living up to the expectation of ROBOTECH Fans everywhere. ROBOTECH: Battle Cry was more to speed in keeping with the anime than Invasion.
The Story behind Invasion, the Invid, a spacefaring race that resembels slugs, have invading earth. You, a member of the Mars Division of the ROBOTECH Reclamation Forces, have to get to Reflex Point, Invid Main Base, and destroy it.
Your primary vehicle is the CYCLONE, a transformable motorcycle (Bike Mode) and power armor (Soldier Mode). You can switch between modes only in open areas. So most of the game is done in soldier.
As the story unfolds there are a few moment of "flashback" voices. These voices are both Human and Invid. You also play thru as two diferent characters. during the course there are no wrong decissions.
As a Fan of the original ROBOTECH ANIME's I was highly disapointed. I rented the game and before the return date, 5 days later, I bought my own copy and beat it shortly after. On an average of 1-2 hours a night and 6 on the weekend I accumilated around 10 hours and beat the game.
Overall I didnt find the game all that fun. I've had it for less than a week, and Im heading to BABBAGE's for a trade

3.0 out of 5 stars Passable FPS with Robotech elements, November 29, 2005
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This is a game which, if not for the Robotech name, I would not have bought. The game is a first person shooter which has nothing to distinguish it from the other games in the genre than the Robotech name/story line and the excellently rendered Invid enemies.

Those enemies are without a doubt the highpoint of the game. Every class of Invid is faithfully created, from scouts and enforcers to troopers. Also the landscapes and background were well done. The ruined cities, Invid hives and crashed ships really add to the environment. Voice acting was good, the Regiss really sounded like the original voice actress.

My complaints...

1. For some reason the game totally ignores the music from the series and chooses to use some scifi-esque music through the game. Why not use the music that fans of the show, presumably your target market, would prefer.

2. Why limit when the player can change modes. One of the true strengths of Robotech Battlecry was the ability to switch modes at the players whim.

3. Why no veritechs? I'm sure most players would have loved a mission or three which involved veritechs.

4. The Invid were too easy to kill. If i remember right a Cyclone would have a pretty tough time in a 1-1 fight with an Invid Trooper. They go down far too easily in this game.

5. Why not have the main character speak in game more often. You have the voice actor from the original series, use him.

6. I would have liked to have seen some interplay with the main characters of the show like we had in Battlecry.

7. Movement seemed clunky and jumpy. The player is often unable to turn to aim quickly enough to engage enemies.

All in all a passable game. At its current price (under $10) its probably worth it for the someone who loves the series, but it doesn't stand up on its own. Without the Robotech elements I would have given this game 2 stars. Another example of a licensed game falling short of hopes and expectations.
