Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Budding ballerinas ages 4 to 6 receive a thorough introduction to ballet at the tutelage of "Miss Rosemary" Boross in this 36-minute video. The program features Rosemary Boross, a student helper, and a small class of preschool age dancers as they explore the basics of warming up at the barre, stretching, center work, dancing across the floor, and revérénce. Miss Rosemary first describes and demonstrates steps like plié, tendu, suté, chassé, and grande jeté, then leads her class through each step to the accompaniment of original piano music by Bruce Stephen Foster. Because the program covers a large variety of steps and progresses fairly quickly, it is most effective when used in conjunction with enrollment in an introductory ballet class. Alternately, young dancers may want to view the video in short segments, then follow with ample practice time to ensure the correct execution of each individual step. --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

A wonderful introduction for children to the world of ballet, especially designed for ages four through six. It contains all the aspects of a formal ballet class including a barre warm-up, stretches, center practive and across the floor combinations. All of the movements are explained step-by-step, followed by a performance of the steps by renowned dance teacher Rosemary Boross and her beginning pre-school students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for pre-schoolers, August 18, 2003
By "victoriaintexas" (Spring, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Ballet [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have two girls - a 3yr old and a 5 1/2 yr old. Neither have taken ballet lessons before. We've had this video for about three months and the girls watch it (and have ballet class!) at least twice a week. I wanted to enroll the girls in a beginner ballet class, but it didn't work with our schedule. This video is really good for introducing the basic things you would probably encounter in a beginning ballet class. The moves are clearly demonstrated and explained, then you practice what was just taught. The video is divided into two halves. In the first half, each move is explained, demonstrated, then practiced. In the second half, the "class" moves through the steps taught, without the instructor demonstrating, just like you would in a ballet class. Both the 3 yr old and 5.5 yr old have been able to understand and learn the moves. I was looking for a traditional ballet class video and I've been very happy with Baby Ballet. (We don't have a ballet barre at our home, we just use the kitchen chairs for barre work and do the class barefoot in our family room.) Both girls are starting to do some of the moves around the house when the tape isn't on, so I think the material is age appropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative new ways to teach ballet, November 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Ballet [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a dance teacher, I was impressed with the way this video gave some good ideas and new ways to approach movements. The movements were actual dance moves, not just "hop around like a bunny rabbit". I would say this video is perfect for a mature child, and possibly one that has had a little bit of dance beforehand, but nothing that a child without a dance background couldn't master. My only wish is that all of the children in my classes were as well behaved and as smart as the children on the videos!

5.0 out of 5 stars Granddaughter in heaven, July 25, 2006
My 3 year old granddaughter kept telling all of us, she wants to be a ballerina. I thought, before putting her in a ballet class, I'd see if I could buy a dvd that would teach her the basics to see how she would do. This dvd did just that. She loves it.

I was disappointed with the combinations given to such young dancers. I did not like the flow, it was a little choppy between demonstration and follow along.
