Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Perseverance and commitment to friendship are qualities that serve Dora well in this double-length Dora the Explorer episode that has Dora singing up a storm and, by the end, sporting a whole new look. Dora and Boots step through a magical gate into Fairytale Land where they discover classic fairytale characters, sweets, and a mean Witch (voiced by Chita Rivera). When Boots eats a tainted banana, he slumbers under a spell that can only be broken by a hug from a true Princess. Problem is, there are no true Princesses in Fairytale Land and time is limited. Dora vows to become a true Princess and embarks upon a challenging journey that begins with a search for a red ring hidden in a dragon's cave. Next she strives to get past a giant in order to teach the rocks to sing and then to defeat marching snowmen, rolling snowballs, and threatening storm clouds to turn winter into spring. Finally, Dora must somehow deliver the moon to the King and Queen. Spanish language skills, careful listening, compassion, and physical movement are promoted in this celebration of Dora's resolve to "never give up" in her quest to awaken her friend "Sleeping Boots." (Ages 2 to 5) --Tami Horiuchi

2.0 out of 5 stars Love Dora, but something in this DVD that I do not like, August 21, 2005
By C2 (Avon Lake, OH) - See all my reviews
Overall, my wife and I love to let our children watch Dora The Explorer. We enjoy many things about Dora - the use of Spanish words, the map, the fact that she's a little girl and is not afraid to perform these adventures, etc.

Not to the part that we don't like and find issue with. With this DVD, there's a scene where Dora encounters a giant who has lost his puppy. The giant asks for Dora's help to find her puppy, which she does and they find the puppy.

Not to sound like an alarmist, but one of the classic child lures is for people to say that they have lost their puppy and need help finding it. As impressionable as our children are, we were afraid that Dora helping a stranger find his puppy could make our jobs that much more difficult about the importance of not talking to strangers. We have since quit watching this DVD.

We would encourage the makers of Dora to come out with a DVD about not talking to strangers, as she is such a great role model for children.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mostly okay [...], November 11, 2005
I just saw this with my two children and while most of the show was typical Dora, cutesy adventures to become a "real princess" [...]

Dora is asked by a "giant" to help him find his lost puppy. Dora doesn't know this Giant yet she gladly accepts the mission. I was more then stunned when I saw and heard this firsthand. This is such a stereotypical lure for predators and Dora just helped the predators by sending the message that it's okay.

I know it's just a cartoon and that Dora is talking to a "Giant" but the message was not lost by my 4 year old and she said we should "always help if someone loses their puppy because they might be sad" I told her that Dora can help but that my own child should never ever help unless Mom or Dad are with her and that it was dangerous.

I would give this one zero stars if that were an option but as it is I am forced to give one star that I do not feel this show is worthy of.

Get this video if you must but be warned that your impressionable child may be left with the same message that if it's okay for Dora to help a stranger find their puppy it must be okay for them to help a stranger find their lost pet, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best one yet!, October 31, 2004
My 17 month old daughter is in love with Dora. We have not stopped playing this Dora DVD since we bought it. For whatever reason, this particular Dora adventure has her glued to the screen. She loves helping Dora along the way and the songs have a good beat to them. I highly recommend this DVD.
