Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Our Kind of Soul, the follow-up to 2003's VH1-propelled Do It for Love, is mostly a can't-miss proposition: Daryl Hall's smooth, expressive voice, synonymous with the Philly soul sound, is so well suited to this material that it feels shrink-wrapped overtop. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love," the Barry White classic, is given a breezy makeover (and, maybe more impressively considering that most artists wouldn't touch it, not mangled); Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" is dusted off and tinkered with till it takes on a signature H&O sound; and "After the Dance," one of Marvin Gaye's most cryptic compositions, comes across like a solved mystery--there's a gentleness and a reverie in the reading will prompt thoughtful listeners to return to it more than a few times. That said, a couple of these covers--the O'Jays "Used to Be My Girl" and Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady"--seem cursory, and the duo can count on a cranky contingent decrying their lack of fresh material. But the strength of three songs introduced here should keep them at bay. First track "Let Love Take Control" gutsily and convincingly glides into Four Tops' "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Soul Violins" strikes notes at once heartfelt and spontaneous, and "Don't Turn Your Back" has the classic Hall & Oates marks of their-kind-of-soul songs like "Out of Touch." --Tammy La Gorce

5.0 out of 5 stars a very good album of soul classics, October 26, 2004
This is a very good album of soul classics. After over 30 years together, Hall and Oates pay tribute to the music that inspired them to become musicians. The best track is their cover of the Spinners song I'll Be Around, but there are so many others. I loved their version of Ooh Child. It is a very postive and optimistic song. Used To Be My Girl is another favorite of mine on this album. I also liked the song Used To Be My Girl. This song has a great beat and really captures the spirit of the original.

There is a beautiful rendition of You Are Everything on here. I think this is one of the best love songs ever written and Hall and Oates sing it so well. I liked the song Can't Get Enough of Your Love too. Hall and Oates' version of this song sounds just as soulful, but I think is more subtle and mellow than Barry White's original.

Neither One of Us is another highlight for me on this CD. Darryl Hall's voice has so passion singing this Gladys Knight classic. You can sense the pain of losing someone in his voice. I really liked it.

Our Kind Of Soul is a CD filled with great tunes. All of the tracks sound great and bring back a lot of memories for me. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys classic soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars A keeper, a classic!, October 28, 2004
I just got my CD today, and am listening right now (again) trying to decide what makes this CD not just a rehash of classic material by mature artists. It could be the way H&O found their own arrangements instead of just swiping the old ones (like the Michael McDonald karaoke CD of soul songs). It could be the obvious love of and respect for genuine R&B. It could be the great way their voices blend, lift above each other, then blend again. It could be the soul genie that blessed Daryl Hall's vocal cords. Or the great mix of classic R&B with new songs that have the feel, the heritage of the great old songs but does not merely imitate or plagiarize them. Could be any of those or all. This is one fine CD - I don't know why you haven't bought it yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Kind Of Soul, October 26, 2004
For those of us who grew up or remember the originals of these soul classics, this album is like coming home again. "Our Kind Of Soul" is a beautifully crafted album that pays homage to some of the best soul songs every written. Best of all, are the three original tracks written by Daryl & John. Dary Hall's vocals are well...the man is just so darn soulful he oozes soul. John does a spectacular performance of "What You See Is What You Get." The harmony is what first drew me to the music of Hall & Oates and that hasn't diminished with time. "Our Kind Of Soul" reinforces all that I have come to love about Hall & Oates. "After The Dance" is a prime example of the harmony that is Hall & Oates. Surely, Marvin Gaye is smilin' down on their rendition of his song. Simply put, I have fallen in love all over again with the music and harmony of the best selling duo of all time.
