Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
GoVideo's R6740 DVD recorder lets you easily record your favorite television shows and treasured home videos to high-quality, long-lasting DVD+R (write-once) and DVD+RW (rewriteable) discs. The recorder's built-in NTSC TV tuner and onscreen user interface permits up to 5 timer recordings over a full year, with 4 recording speeds providing between 1 and 6 hours of content on each DVD disc. The R6740's high-quality recordings and easy operation make it a perfect replacement for the traditional VCR.

The R6740's versatile playback features include progressive-scan video outputs and support for recordable CDs filled with MP3 audio files and JPEG images. A variety of video and audio inputs--including front-panel connections for fast, temporary hookups--grant connection to virtually all televisions and home theater components. An easy-to-use full-function remote control commands all the action.

The R6740 features an integrated EZ-Guide feature that helps simplify DVD recording by walking you step-by-step through recording a variety of content to DVD. An intuitive sequence of questions and instructions appear onscreen to guide users from start to finish through the recording process. The R6740 also comes with GoVideo's innovative AutoPlay feature, designed to skips ads, trailers, and menus, jumping right to the start of your movie. Simply place the disc in the tray, press the play key, and the movie starts without interruption.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the R6740 stands ready to deliver the full playback potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

When recording, the unit automatically creates a new disc title every time you start a new recording. You can then add chapters to these recordings manually or have them automatically inserted at 5-minute intervals (up to 30 minutes).

Connections include a pair of composite- and S-video inputs, an RF antenna input, and an IEEE 1394 DV (digital video) input for a direct, high-quality connection with a digital camcorder. Front-panel inputs (including the DV input) foster easy hookups with camcorders and other video components.

DVD+RW discs require no finalizing: you can record, eject, and play them with minimal fuss, thanks to "background formatting." This feature, which lowers total burning time, is an advantage over the "dash" formats. Other DVD+RW advantages include on-disc content editing and multisession writing. And, through DVD+RW and DVD+R's compatibility with most existing DVD players, they're a great way for you to share your special memories with family and friends.

To help you navigate the transition from VCR to DVD recording, GoVideo's "white-glove customer care" includes free telephone assistance in making your first recording, should you need it.

What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, a blank DVD+RW disc, a full-function remote control, remote batteries, an RF coaxial audio/video cable (three feet), a stereo analog audio/composite-video interconnect, a quick-reference guide, warranty card, and a user's manual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works great since I downloaded upgrade, September 28, 2004
Potential buyers of this unit or other brands in the same price range should be knowledgeable of the two competing recordable media formats: DVD+ and DVD-. This unit records only to DVD+R and +RW and the write-once discs (DVD+R) recorded on the R6740 will NOT play on other DVD players, even when finalized. The +RW's WILL play on other players, that is if the machine doesn't give you the "Write Fail" message - this unit is quite particular about the brand of media you use. I recorded successfully with a pack of Memorex blanks, so I bought the same type of blanks again and continually got "Write Fail", so now I've got to try another brand. Two emails to GoVideo have not been replied to so far, regarding this issue. I can also hear a low level whistling sound on playback with discs recorded on the R6740, although not that noticeable unless you turn the volume way up. Otherwise, this machine has great picture quality and is good as a player, or recorder if you can put up with the limitations I've mentioned. UPDATE: Since writing this review I found out there was a downloadable upgrade for this unit that would make DVD+R's (write-once discs) recorded on the machine playable on "third party" DVD players. I downloaded the upgrade, burned it to disc, placed it in the GoVideo and the upgrade process took about 3 minutes and now I CAN play DVD+R's on the other players in my house. Add one star for a 4-star rating, although the company's customer service still haven't replied to my emails but I think I can live with this thing now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly excellent!, July 19, 2004
By A Customer
I wanted to buy DVD recorder for quite some time. I ran out of patience and thought of buying one. I wanted to go for Philips R80 but after reading reviews for R80 I decided to give Govideo R6740 a try since I liked all the features and specifications. I had lot of doubts about it since it just came out in the market and I did not find good reviews on other Govideo DVD recorders. I bought, came home, I opened, I liked the design, I read the manual and started to record a VHS to DVD - no problems! I did not have to call their 1-800 number! It was all easy. I could check all the recording qualities in about 3 hrs - they are all good for the purpose though I would not use 6 hrs one for my home videos. I was really surprised by performance of the product compared to reviews of Philips R80. I have been recording (test) for more than a week now without any issues - I am really happy. UPDATE.... After reading Rick's review, I AGAIN checked my DVDs that I created (I used Memorex DVD +R media) using Govideo R6740 on my Magnavox DVD PLAYER. It played just fine. I did not have to download anything. I have converted my home videos to 50+ DVDs so far and did not have any issues at all. It could be DVD PLAYER issue. I do respect Rick's review and experience, but I wanted to update mine again since it was different experience. Hope this gives you additional datapoint for your decision.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but with limitations, February 10, 2005
By Marva Mason (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I purchased this DVD Recorder about a year ago and have basically been happy with it. It is very easy to set up, set the timer, record. The remote works well. The main problem I have encountered is that often, when you turn it on to record, there is a hissing in the recording. If you turn the recording off, and start the recording again, the hissing is not there. This is ok if you are home and there to correct the hissing sound, but not ok if you are gone and have set the timer to record something that you really want to see on tv and its destroyed by the hissing noise. This functionality of the machine is very disappointing. Its simple to assign titles to what you have recorded. I'm waiting for another generation of the machines to come out and upgrade to a better model.
