Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Out of Nothing, the band's fourth album, is the best they have ever made. The McNamara brothers have buckled down to some serious songwriting (aided by Coldplay's Chris Martin on first single "Gravity") to produce a selection of songs that can all lay claim to the title "Classic".

Opening with the monumental "Ashes" it is clear from the off that this is not some huge stylistic leap. Instead Embrace have consolidated all they are good at (epic, heart-warming anthems) and finally made the album they have always promised. "Gravity" is exactly what you'd expect, a Coldplay tune as played by Embrace, but where as Chris Martin and the boys are often stark and fidgety Embrace cover the track in a lushness that makes you swoon. "Someday" has them coming across like the younger brothers of Spiritualised complete with a finale featuring a full-on gospel choir, "Wish 'Em All Away" is harmonica-soaked loveliness with a chorus that touches the heavens, and "Spell It Out" is a string-laden monster that has 'festival closer' written all over it.

The album ends as magnificently as it begins with a triplet of songs that takes the breath away. The gentle "A Glorious Day", atmospheric "Near Life" and magnificent title track prove just how far Embrace have come since the days of out-of-tune criticisms and gags about being Oasis' little brothers. Out of Nothing is a truly exceptional album that suggests that, far from being over, the journey for Embrace has only just begun. --Amazon.co.uk

5.0 out of 5 stars lets get this straight before they get any bigger here!, June 16, 2005
EMBRACE, probably one of the GREATEST bands of this era and probably the most underappreciated and ignored bands of this time.

Until now?

First of all, lets get the Coldplay comparisons out the door. EMBRACE have been releasing music since 1997 (coldplay was just starting) Early in Coldplay's career, they were opening shows for EMBRACE in the UK. So before we get all crazy with the comparison, its more like Coldplay SOUND LIKE EMBRACE, not the other way around.

EMBRACE's 1st album "The Good Will Out" is hands down one of the greatest British albums ever made and could come close to one of the greatest albums in general ever made. It contained some of the most depressing, emotional, intense, beautiful songs ever written and WAS released in the USA but was completely ignored by everyone while it went Platinum in the UK.

Being a fan of the band since seeing them in Scotland during a semester overseas in 1997 it was truly sad to see them get no press at all in this country and until "Out of Nothing", I pretty much thought they would never be heard here. Its nice to see that people are FINALLY waking up to good music and discovering a band that has been around for almost a decade now. This being their 4th album and in my personal opinion its not their best, but its definitely top notch like their other 3 albums which are all different in their own paticular ways. (Plus they have some of the greatest b sides of all time)

Saying that, if you heard "The Good Will Out" in 1997, its hard to think the band could ever top it, so if "Out of Nothing" is your first experience, you may consider it their best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprising comeback..., December 17, 2004
By James Wilson "Music Freak" (Mount Vernon, OH USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was never a big Embrace fan. I bought "The Good Will Out" used for about $1 a couple years ago and I never really got into it. And seeing as how everyone agreed that was their best album, I promptly forgot about them. Fast forward to 2004, when this was being touted as their "comeback" album with the Chris Martin-penned "Gravity" as the lead single. When your comeback single is written by the frontman of Coldplay, I'm not going to take you very seriously. However, after a flood of positive reviews for the album, I decided to check it out. I was thoroughly surprised as this is way better than anything else they've ever done, everything really came together nicely for this album. In particular, "Ashes" and "Someday" are thunderously epic tunes, with most of the other songs following in this same vein. Quality lyrics backed by music that screams to the heavens, this is the album Embrace has been threatening to write for a while, and they finally pulled it together. As for "Gravity", well it's a nice song but thankfully unnecessary due to the high caliber of every other song on the album. Definitely worth checking out!
