Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Nicole C. Mullen has become one of the most loved and respected singer/songwriters in the Christian industry. Everyday People picks up right where the previous albums left off, offering a rang of worshipful songs from the danceable "This, This" to "Redeemer" like moments on "I Am". Reoccurring throughout Everyday People is a theme about real people, fans that have left an impact on Nicole, friends dealing with abuse, issues like freedom, and how all these people reconcile with their creator. Nicole has tapped mainstream producers James "Big Jim" Wright (Mariah Carey, Yolanda Adams) of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis' Flyte Time Productions, as well as production duo Drew & Shannon (Andrew Ramsey & Shannon Sanders) (India Arie, Cindy Morgan, FFH) to expand the sonic palette, in addition to husband and long-time producer David Mullen and Tommy Sims.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicole C. Mullen's Everyday People, A Review, January 13, 2005
So I recently picked up Nicole C. Mullen's latest album. If you've heard her previous albums, you'll be slightly surpised by this album. Nicole C. Mullen is known for her hodgepodge of influences. She has an acoustic-world music-blues-CCM-gospel-rock-jazz vibe that runs through her music. This is a huge asset on her album, although you usually need to listen to her albums two times to take it all in. So I was sort of surprised at how much of a pop sensibility was running through the first couple of songs on this album. But things are not always what they seem. What Mullen does here is to dip a little bit more into a sort of Motown influence, and even works in a little hip hop into it, a first for her as I recall, all with her inimitable vocal style.

Although the musicianship of her album is awesome, Nicole C. Mullen's greatest asset in this album is her songwriting. For those who may not have know, she was the writer of Jaci Velasquez's hit On My Knees, and had established herself first as a songwriter before becoming a solo artist. Her songwriting skills are out in full force on this album. There were definitely moments where I had to rewind a song because a phrase caught my ear.

Now there are definitely the more radio and church-service friendly songs like I Am, which is the same vein as her earlier songs My Redeemer Lives and On My Knees, but the gems are in the songs where she breaks out of the typical. My own personal favorites are Bye Bye Brianna and Valorie. Bye Bye Brianna seems like a song that I will have to see live at some point, and am in the market for Nicole C. Mullen tickets if someone has them (though unfortunately, not for the concert tomorrow night in the Twin Cities). I'll give this album 4.5 out of 5 stars.
