Product Description

From the manufacturer
The Apple Wireless Mouse lets you take advantage of the Bluetooth adapter built into your PowerBook, installed in your iMac or Power Mac, or added to your eMac and iBook. The benefit? A degree of freedom from physical restraint that you can’t even imagine until you try it. This new Bluetooth-based peripheral uses adaptive frequency hopping to give you reliable wireless performance from a range of up to 30 feet, and offers secure 128-bit, over-the-air encryption — keeping sensitive information safe.

Since this mouse is wireless, you’ll enjoy the freedom to use it practically anywhere. Not only does the optical tracking engine allow it to work well on most surfaces, but the fact that it’s wireless means you can use it in your left hand or your right, on your pants leg, keyboard tray — or from across your office. There’s no cable to clutter your desk and tether you to your computer.

The wireless mouse has a single button that makes it easy and comfortable to use, regardless of the size of your hand. Whether you have a light touch or a heavy hand, the thoughtful click-force adjustment feature makes it more customizable. And the optical engine provides accurate and responsive cursor movement unhampered by performance-inhibiting dirt and dust buildup.

Apple has made setting up Bluetooth devices as simple as turning them on and clicking through an intuitive setup assistant. The mouse and keyboard are no exception: The new combined Keyboard and Mouse system preference panel includes a Bluetooth tab that lets you set up your new wireless mouse and keyboard in a snap.

Like using a mouse with your PowerBook? The new wireless mouse is perfect for you, especially when you take your laptop on trips. The mouse has been designed with an off-switch that lets you save battery power when you travel. And you only need to put the mouse in the on position to reestablish its wireless link with your Mac.

Product Description
The Apple Wireless Mouse works with the Bluetooth option in your Mac to provide a cable-free way to interact with your system at a distance of up to 10 meters (33 feet). Bluetooth virtually eliminates interference with other wireless devices such as other keyboards and mice in an office setting or cordless phones and remote control toys that are found in the home environments. Apple is the first to deliver intelligent software to prevent interference with Airport wireless networks without any performance degradation. The sleek, easy-to-use design of the mouse fits most any size hand and is equally comfortable for both right and left handed users. A click tension adjustment accommodates both heavy-handed users as well as those with a light touch. The Wireless Mouse features an optical tracking engine that provides smooth accurate tracking on most surfaces. An advanced power management system automatically switches to low power modes during periods of inactivity. The off switch allows you to conserve power when you're away from your system or when you're traveling with your system. The optical mouse is an ideal input device to throw in your bag to use on the road with your PowerBook or iBook.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cool looking, but not much else, February 3, 2005
This mouse looks great, goes perfect with the rest of my Mac setup and is enough to get me by. But apart from the looks, this mouse does not really have a lot more going for it. In fact, it has several drawbacks:

- Only one button and no scroll wheel. This is a known drawback of all Apple mice. The right-click is really useful and allows you to work faster. But beyond that, the fact that the entire front part of the mouse is the actual button makes it a little hard to control when dragging items.

- Poor battery life. I use my Mac an average of 5 hrs a day, and I have had to replace the batteries every couple of weeks. I tried to use rechargable batteries but they only last a few days.

- Slow response. While you are tracking, the response actually isn't bad. But when you stop and try to move the mouse again, there is a small delay before it actually starts to move. This is probably no big deal for business applications, but trying to play a fast paced FPS game with it is no fun.

- Small. I have average sized hands and I find the mouse a little too small for comfort. It's nothing I can't get used to, but a larger size would make my experience a lot more enjoyable. I also own a Logitech MX700 mouse that I use with my Windows PC and the level of comfort is beyond comparison.

I love Apple and most of the products they make, but I hope they get their act together and release a decent line of mice once and for all!

UPDATE: I have two apple Computers in my home with a Bluetooth mouse each. Over the past eight months I've had to replace both of them twice because they just stop working all of a sudden. Stay away from this product and save yourself a headache.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's really not as bad as they say., March 13, 2006
I opted for the wireless keyboard and mouse when I bought my new iMac a couple months ago, and have been happy with the decision.

I'm a slacker, do-nothing type who sits in front of the computer all day, and when I'm away, my husband fills those shoes. I didn't replace the batteries in the mouse until today, and have yet to change the batteries in the keyboard. I don't know what people are doing to run through their batteries so fast (cough*pron*cough), but 6+ hours/day for two months without a battery switch is a pretty good rate for me.

Also, I have to beg to differ on one more topic: the wireless mouse DOES HAVE TWO-BUTTON CAPABILITIES! Either hold down the mouse about a half second longer, while clicking, to bring up the right-button options; or, for a quicker response, hold down the control button while clicking. It may not have the actual two-button design, but it does the job, and it does so without crumbs between unnecessary buttons.

My one problem is that it doesn't appear to have a scroll feature, though I may just not know of it yet. I won't start hopping up and down, screaming crazy mumbo jumbo, though, until I know for sure. That's just one of the perks of being a rational human being, which I enjoy daily while clicking away at my wireless mouse.

Perhaps you would enjoy this, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Apple's mouse loses its tail, January 1, 2005
First, note that this mouse, like all Apple mice, has a single button. It's for the old-school Mac user for whom a single button is all-powerful. If you've recently come over to the Mac from a PC or Unix workstation, this mouse is not for you. Look at the Logitech or other non-Apple rodents.

Now that they've left...the Apple Wireless Mouse is identical in form to the optical, USB Pro Mouse, minus the cable. With batteries inserted, it's a little heavier. The click tension adjustment has only two settings, down from three, and is now hidden inside the battery cover. Single-use lithium batteries are included, alkaline AAs will work;the eco-conscious should look into AA-size NiMH rechargeables. I'm currently using the ones from my digital camera.

Tracking is typical of an optical mouse. Response time to movement and clicks are not noticeably different from a wired mouse.

Setup is easy under Panther with the Apple Bluetooth assistant. My PowerBook had an older version of the Bluetooth firmware installed, which caused it to drop the connection every time it went to sleep. Upgrading to firmware version 1.2 solved this. Since then, it's behaved exactly like a corded mouse; it even wakes the Mac from sleep when clicked.
