Magna Canta - Mystical Chant, July 8, 2005
I am a big fan of gregorian chants and thanks to artists like Enigma, Era, Delerium & Lesiem there is no shortage of this beautiful intoxicating genre of music. Then came along the german group Magna Canta which blew away the competition. Only Era now stands toe to toe in competition with this wonderfully arranged vocalist group. This album release 'Gregorian Mystics' is a 2 CD compilation with 12 songs on each album. Mainly the songs are from older album versions of Magna Canta but for the loyal fans there are a few previously unreleased B-Sides and remixes of a few songs.
CD1 consists of 'Silentium' and 'Cantandus' as previously unreleased. The rest of the songs are old songs from other albums. But listening to the hit song 'Ritmo' and 'Agnus Dei' never gets tiring. The chants meld well with the synths, bass and sometimes techno-dance feel of the songs.
CD2 was my personal favourite with more B-Sides like 'Himawari', 'Close To Heaven and the remixed hit song 'Hymne' (Deep Spiritual Mix)which was actually a great remix. Several of these remixed songs are starting to find their way on nightclub's DJ playlistings.
This is a must buy for any serious gregorian chant fan. The listener shall not be disappointed by the diverse and yet entertaining chant mixed with dance style sounds on many of the songs. Whether you wanna dance and party or rest and relax, there are songs on both CD's for both of these things.

For Fans and Newcomers!, October 4, 2005
I only recently began listening to Magna Canta, but I've always been drawn to groovy, mystic sounds and Gregorian chant. No doubt I'd probably heard Magna Canta before, but as is sometimes the way, you hear something and don't know who's the artist or what's the title or annoying things like that. Then the song haunts you for days after, and you either find out what it is or it goes in the mental file referred to as "Things to Find Out at a Later Date".
This 2-disc CD is awesome! The music itself is superb...the chants mix beautifully with the music, the beats lend the music a certain depth and life that's nearly addictive, and the Latin really helps transport you to a different realm of listening pleasure. Some of the tracks are more suitable to relaxing than others, but it's all great stuff. I love to pop in one of these CD's when I'm driving or cleaning or even exercising. The music helps take your mind off the monotony of daily tasks.
The CD's themselves do contain a number of tracks from Magna Canta's previously released material, and I didn't know this when I bought the album. I'm not disappointed, however. The remixes are great, and the chants blend so well that you never really get tired of listening, especially if you want some "mystic dance club" music without having to leave home.
Overall, this is certainly a worthy CD set to have in one's collection. For longtime fans of Magna Canta, you won't mind having a few repeats of songs in your library...and for newcomers, this is a terrific introduction to this genre and this group. Unless you don't like chant or mystic groovy dance beats, you can't go wrong with this CD set.

EXACTLY what I was looking for. Better than Enigma!, July 20, 2006
This is very well-done, blending beats and electronica with beautiful gregorian chanting. Exactly what I was looking for! It's darker, moodier and more varied than Enigma. Better in my opinion.
The cover is beautiful, eerie and mystical.
