Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's tempting to compare Mexican crooner Pablo Montero favorably to genre superstar Alejandro Fernandez. Both men have helped bring ranchera music to the masses via deep, rich vocal talents and dark good looks that make many a female--and male--fan swoon. But whereas Fernandez has mastered the art of nuanced, dramatic vocal styling, Montero still has a few things to learn. It's evident on Con la Bendicion de Dios, which effectively blends traditional and modern sounds but is still an overall modest effort. Montero has been paired with first-class talent, including writers Gustavo Santander, Claudia Brant and producer Kike Santander (who helmed Fernandez's A Corazon Abierto). But Montero seems more a label puppet than an artist in his own right. His voice (and the production) does recall Fernande" on tracks "Pasito a Paso," "Cuando Llora el Cortazon" and "Dicen Por Ahi," but there's little sense in settling for an admirable imitation when the real Fernandez's music is so readily accessible. --Joey Guerra

5.0 out of 5 stars Pablo is ranchera's crown prince, December 31, 2004
By S. D. Clemett "Brujarubia" (Astoria, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Pablo hasn't given us a bad song yet, although a couple of the songs on this CD sound like they were meant for other singers (e.g., "Mi Flor y Mi Espina" sounds like it was written for Marc Anthony). No matter; a song like this is elevated when rendered by a voice like Pablo's, which is like a passionate embrace. In combination with his princely appearance there is no clearer evidence that he was born to sing to women.

This CD is a blend of pop songs and rancheras, like Pablo's earliest CDs. Although my local radio station is playing the more pop-oriented "Dicen Por Ahi," Pablo is at his best in the ranchera songs: "Carinito Quereme," "Palenque" and "7 Balas Pa' Quererte". The intense instrumentation of these songs does not in any way overshadow his voice, which is one of the richest of all contemporary male singers. It exudes machismo, romance, and strong emotion more intensely than any other on the Latin music scene today; only Alejandro Fernandez can match him for this (and not all the time).

The lyrics booklet cover photo makes him look boyish, but the interior photos are truer to the very charismatic man he now is. Here's hoping that the record company soon releases a new music video collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pablo Montero bests Luis Miguel!!, November 20, 2004
This new release by Pablo Montero is, in one word, INCREDIBLE.
Pablo sings with more passion and conviction than on previous releases. There is a spark present that elevates this release head and shoulders above other mariachi-themed releases... including superstar Luis Miguel's!
