Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Widely dismissed as a passing novelty in its formative years, New York inventor Robert Moog's electronic synthesizer eventually evolved into the most revolutionary instrument of the past century. While the sonic burblings of the original Moog are too often associated with 60's/70's kitsch, musician/documentarian Hans Fjellestad ably frames his film/soundtrack around a more contemporary mix of styles that better showcase the instrument's enduring, nearly boundless potential. Fjellestad's own "Abominatron" intersperses samples of Moog himself discussing the instrument, while Stereolab and Meat Beat Manifesto offer the synth a compelling spotlight within their own band contexts and Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins give it some overdue funk/r&b props on "When Bernie Speaks." The bonus disc of non-film cuts haphazardly documents the instrument's historical contributions to rock/pop forms that range from prog (ELP, Yes) to new wave (Devo, Gary Numan, New Order) and mainstream kitsch (They Might Be Giants cover of the Disney Electrical Parade's "Baroque Hoedown") even as it shortchanges Moogphiles of the classical and soundtrack contributions of Wendy Carlos and the bold, inventive excursions of veteran jazz pianist Dick Hyman. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool as Ice, January 9, 2005
Couldn't be a cooler soundtrack this year than Moog. Even if you aren't the biggest fan of synthesizer music (and I am not) this is still an amazing cd. Great songs by Bernie Worrell with Bootsy Collins on vocals and The Album Leaf. I also like the songs by Pete DeVriese and Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys). Really cool stuff. A bonus disc is also included (while not on the packaging) with all the great prog rock and new wave contributions of Moog synthesizer music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forward-Focused Vs. Ancient History, December 7, 2004
Those funky, warm sounds of the Moog synthesizer always make a mark. This soundtrack is really quite an accomplishment. Seems like the folks that put it all together didn't have some sort of agenda to put all the "moog masters" on there and the soundrack greatly benefits from it. They seemed to focus on artists who are making the most interesting sounds with the Moog at present, rather than toy around with ancient history. This record has some of the most amazing new electronic music being created today by the likes of Stereolab, Tortoise, Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins, and Roger O'Donnell. Newer artists really add something special with their contributions. I haven't heard of all the bands on this disc but I'm certain I will soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, September 14, 2004
Wow! What an amazing record! Just when you thought there wouldn't be any more great Moog albums to come out here comes this compilation soundtrack to the upcoming feature film. Stereolab is back in full force with a classic synth track, Charlie Clouser (from Nine Inch Nails) comes in with some of the most wicked drum beats I've heard in a long while, and Tortoise brings to the table as emotional a track as I've heard them produce. I'm not familiar with all the artists on the album but there are other great tracks by 33, The Album Leaf, and Pete Devriese. Can't wait to see the film when it hits a town near me. The second disc is also outstanding with "classic" tracks from ELP, YES, and DEVO.
