Biography

Brazilian-bred/American-born siblings Erica and Bruce Driscoll compose the sultry indie pop of Astaire. Erica, who is three years older than Bruce, received a healthy dose of traditional Brazilian music while growing up in Grand Rapids, MI. When they weren't soaking up the sounds of Astrud Gilberto and the like, Astaire was writing and recording their own Britpop-influenced material. In 2002, the… Read more in Amazon's Astaire (Author) Store

"Sensuous Euro pop."

Product Description

(From All Music Guide:) Don't Whisper Lies from Astaire is not only a stunning debut release, but an impressive set of songs from this brother/sister duo who are only in their early 20s. When Erica Driscoll isn't hypnotizing listeners with her Julee Cruise-like falsetto and playing keyboards on select tracks, younger brother Bruce Driscoll is strict with his various instrumentation. The two touch upon their Brazilian heritage for a flirty, dance-pop style of songs, and it's not too far from Chase's work with Ivy and the more sultry moments from the Cardigans and Saint Etienne. From the spellbinding synth beats and Erica's airy vocals on the EP's standout track "L-L-Love" to the softer pop of "Right Where I Want You," Astaire don't lose grasp of their club-inspired backdrop. Ivy bandmates Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger assist in fleshing out Astaire's dreamy synth pop sound on "Weightless." Schlesinger plays drums while Chase helps with production, mixing, and adds backing vocals to this stunning track, and again, fleshing out the pop art that is this five-song EP. Legendary conductor/arranger Zé Luis Oliveira is all class with his strings, flute and percussion arrangements on "Don't Whisper Lies," further complementing Bruce and Erica's vocal collaboration. Erica's girlishly charming vocals accentuate the album's overall innocence, for such a theme supports Astaire's simplistic, yet structured approach the first time out. Astaire's production work is so clear cut, "Don't Whisper Lies" speaks for itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good stuff, August 16, 2005

I don't usually like commercial pop music, and while this may be "under the radar", that's exactly what this is. However, this EP is really, really good. "L-L-Love" deserves to be the biggest song of 2005. It's pure ear candy with some of the sexiest vocals I've ever heard. The rest of the EP just confirms that Blondfire (that's their new name) is one of the most promising commercial acts in a long while...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Song, March 9, 2005
I heard their single L-L-Love and was pretty impressed. The sound is different from other songs out today. It is catchy like pop, but has that extra something.

5.0 out of 5 stars EP from Hip Heaven, March 24, 2005

I fell in love with Astaire from the moment I downloaded their single "L-L-Love" from iTunes a few weeks back. It was one of the FREE Singles of the Week, which work great in introducing me to cool new artists.

Astaire's style is loungy pop and their sound is that of the Cardigans, abeit fresher and hipper. I expect a solid album from them in the very near future. I will go see them this May at the Troubadour and I know they'll ROCK!

If you can't get their album from Amazon, try to get it from iTunes. You'll love it!
