Biography

Atlanta-based Christian alternative metal act the Chariot is a showcase for singer Josh Scogin. Formerly frontman for the popular Christian nu-metallers Norma Jean (originally known as Luti-Kriss, before Dirty South rapper Ludacris eclipsed their limited popularity), Scogin left Norma Jean for undisclosed personal reasons in 2003, following the release of their second album. Largely dispensing… Read more in Amazon's The Chariot Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, July 18, 2005
First time I heard these guys I COULDN'T STAND THEM AT ALL, mainly because of the feedback.
But hey, I kept listening to them and the next thing I knew they were my favorite band. I'm into the Christian hardcore scene right now, and these guys are by far my fav. Yea it's raw, and most people listen and say that "there's no talent" and it's "just noise and feedback". Yea the feedback is annoying when you first hear them, but after you listen for a while you start to appreciate that it's there for a reason and it only makes the song sound more powerful.

Personally, the highlight of this disk for me would be Scogin's vocals. I haven't heard the entire BTMAKTC disk, so I can't compare them (nor do I want to, since this clearly is NOT norma jean). Anyone who can scream like that is NOT human. The instruments and his voice generate pure chaos...good stuff.

If you're more into the organized metalcore stuff...then go for Zao or Haste the Day...but if you want something that'll leave you thinking "Man...I wish I had the energy to do that" freaking listen to this stuff. It's great.

Lots of my friends complain about the vocals. They say that there's no talent because all he is doing is screaming, and anyone can do that. Hah, sure everyone can scream but how many people's screams sound as perfect as Scogin's? The screaming emphasises what the lyrics, it's not there to make up for a lack of singing talent. Scogin is amazing, simply put.

Like Norma Jean, the lyrics are kinda cryptic...
But if you keep in mind that they're Christians they can be deciphered (or you can just ask them on Myspace =P)
BTW, this pistol is my ministry doesn't have anything to do with Indians, it's about how people are trying to do good things using harmful tools and don't recognmize it...whoever wrote that review a while ago. As for the songs:

1)Before There Was Atlanta, There Was Douglasville (8/10) - Great intro, doesn't really get as intense as the other songs... I love the begining with the "ten thousand times ten thousand" (which I'm guessing refers to angels)

2)Someday, In the Event That Mankind Actually Figures Out What It Is That... (7/10) - Good song...title is long which is creative but kinda dumb lol, i dunno. Good song but nothing really special.

3)Dialogue With a Question Mark (9/10) - Just sheer brutality.

4)Die Interviewer (10/10) - hahaha banjo opening is crazy, ending has so much energy it's amazing. The "DON'T SAY" screamed 32534673573 times and then the deep...almost demonic voice screaming it in the back of Scogin's throat as the song closes and Scogin continues to scream his lungs out. Freaking Amazing.

5)And Then, Came Then (235235632462346/10) - Best song on the disk. Opens up with the violin, all calm...you just get the feeling that this song is going to be EPIC...which it is...since it's singing about the apocalypse :O). After the violin comes Scogin w/ his scary-satanic deep screaming voice and then the normal screaming. The lyrics are great, and after all the lyrics and chaos the song pauses and kinda fades out for a moment, then zooms back with a melodic and heavy ending. By far the greatest song on the album.

6)Company, The Comfort, The Grave (9/10) - Good song, and I don't like the music video. The message is awesome and it's also heavy.

7) Bullet Never Lies, And Will Prove All Things (An Allegory of Unfaithful (9/10) - Just amazing... "Hello America, where is your fortune!?"

8)Yellow Dress: Locked Knees (250/10) - This song SCARED the crap out of me the first time I listened to it. The screams are really...really forced out of Scogin...almost impossible to understand. Then he gets into the spanish. Sounds like Satan :O). Probably the only song I'd classify as "sounding evil" on this disk, and I know he's singing about Jesus and loving Him and stuff lol...pretty funny. It's just a terrifying song, I love it so much.

9)If Wishes Were Horses More Beggars Would Ride Them (8/10) - Calm opening...then BAM! in the face. good song.

10)Good Night My Lady, And a Forever Farewell (10/10) - Great closing song. Very very heavy and AWESOME lyrics...the pause and then the "SITUATED just below the ground, just ABOVE YOUR HEAD!" sends chills down my spine everytime i listen to it.

All in all, don't buy this disk if you can't take chaos. Take time to appreciate the lyrics too...good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chaotic Metal: Definitely An Acquired Taste, April 5, 2006
I got a good laugh out of the sticker on the corner of "Everything Is Alive..." that read something like "For Fans of Opeth, Unearth, and ASHLEE SIMPSON". A band on Solid State Records that sounds like a mediocre pop "star"? Yeah right; this band definitely has sense of humor.

When I first played the CD, I listened to the first track all the way through. I absolutely hated it. I then skipped through all the other tracks and listened to about 30 seconds of each. More of the same. I couldn't believe that I had wasted my money on this pile of slow-paced loud noisy garbage. The guitar feedback grated on my eardrums, and I ended up with a massive headache. Needless to say, I took a break from The Chariot for a while.

A few weeks later, however, the song "Die Interviwer" popped up on my mp3 player's random shuffle, so I listened to the whole song. I could actually tolerate it. Soon, I started listening to more and more songs from the album, and I was amazed by the realness of the sound, and the incredible brutality of it all: the ripping guitars, the pounding drums, and the lead singer, who roars like a man possessed. I listened to the album all the way through, and I was hooked.

The Chariot is a truly incredible band, and is nothing like I've ever heard before. They draw a listener in more than Norma Jean ever will. They are just as amazingly brutal in concert, also. However, a word of warning: You cannot just start listening to this band. A love of metal is required, and you have to be open to new styles. I would recommend listening to bands such as Becoming the Archetype before picking this album up. But it is well worth it; listening to The Chariot is a breathtaking experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved Norma Loved Chariot, December 28, 2004
This album is freakin AMAZING. It sounds weird, but I just can't gte enough of the intentional feedback they have on their guitars. Adds a pretty cool element to pauses.

The lyrics are amazing as expected, the drums are blasting, the guitars are extremely tight, and the screams make my head spin.

Buy this album today.
