Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Welcome to the future.
What if you could fit your whole life -- all your music, all your photos, all your movies, all your email -- in a computer as fun and useful as an iPod? You can, with the 17- or this 20-inch widescreen iMac G5. The entire computer, including G5-based logic board, slot-loading optical drive, hard disk, speakers and power supply, dwells inside the enchanting display.

The new iMac G5 includes power supply, stereo speakers, and a slot-loading SuperDrive enclosed within the widescreen flat-panel display.

The Display is the Computer
Apple designers removed the extraneous, miniaturized the necessary, souped up the performance and concealed the result in immaculate perfection. The iMac G5 hangs suspended from a graceful anodized aluminum stand and its widescreen display lets you retouch photos and surf the web while you chat with friends or scan email -- wirelessly, thanks to built-in AirPort technology -- and see everything at the same time. In fact, this 1680 x 1050 pixel resolution 20-inch display can show more than two full pages side by side. That's 36% more screen area than the 17-inch, at 1440 x 900 pixels.

Technology Democratized
The iMac G5 brings the same innovative system architecture in Apple professional desktops to the home. The G5 processor makes everything zippier -- connecting to email or the web, creating movies, songs and DVDs, arranging photos or playing music. Choose this1.8 or 2.0 GHz G5 processor, in a 17-inch or 20-inch model, that's ready to run modern 64-bit applications under Mac OS X Tiger: the world's most advanced, stable and secure operating system. What's more, the G5 speeds up Mac OS X and all the other included software, such as iLife '05, Quicken 2005 and World Book.

All-in-One Ease
iMac G5 tucks away modern amenities, such as the 8x SuperDrive on the 17-inch and this 20-inch models, inside its two-inch thin body. Burn DVD slideshows of vacation photos or send friends a DVD with a special movie for the holidays. Back up your iTunes collection or make a mix CD for that special someone. Naturally, you can pop in your DVD movies and watch them in 16:10 widescreen letterbox format on the gorgeous LCD display. Delight in pristine audio from fully integrated stereo speakers. Cleverly pointed down, they bounce sound waves off your desk, counter or table into your ears.

A Place for Everything
Remove the back cover on the iMac G5, and you'll discover that perfect order is not just a requirement, but also candy to the eye. Thoughtful touches abound its dense layout, since Apple engineers considered the placement of every bit of technology -- several times. Inside, you'll find enough modern technology to make even nerds drool. That's a 1.8 GHz G5 processor, 600 MHz frontside bus, 256 MB DDR SDRAM running at 400 MHz and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64 MB graphics memory. So you'll be able to play Worlds of Warcraft, Doom III and other fantastic entertainment.

Power to Spare
What's more, the thin enclosure even holds the power supply, so you won't need to accommodate a huge power brick. Obsessed by the drive to offer you the best personal computer, Apple engineers strove to add fit and finish in every detail, down to the power switch located on the back panel. When you remove the panel, the button goes with it. But with the case closed, the button makes contact with the power supply.

Quieter than a whisper, the iMac G5 measures less than 25dB when idle and a slit in the back of the case allows heat to rise out the top

Ports include: Two FireWire 400 ports, three USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports, VGA output, S-video and composite video output.

Stay Connected
Of course the iMac G5 offers all the right ports to connect to your universe with ease. Starting with the new headphone jack that's also a mini-optical plug. So you can watch DVDs and listen to them in 5.1 surround sound. You'll also find a passel of USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 connectors for your camera, camcorder or gamepad. Or if you want to connect your iMac to your TV or a digital projector, the mini-VGA port gives you the option. The line in jack lets you record an electric guitar into GarageBand. iMac offers built-in Gigabit Ethernet for wired networking as well as a modem for dial-up Internet and faxing.

Extreme Graphics
A sizzling new graphics card and next-generation high-bandwidth architecture kick 3D games and graphics into high gear, with improved frame rates over the previous iMac G5 in Halo. Every new iMac G5 comes standard with AGP 8x graphics support and the ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video memory for higher performance graphics and effects -- ideal for next-generation games. All models deliver over a billion textured pixels per second and high-precision cinematic shaders to generate the most lifelike characters. With Quartz Extreme, the graphics processors take over transform and lighting calculation functions from the CPU, freeing the G5 processor to perform essential system tasks faster than ever before.

Go Wireless
Better yet, eliminate the desktop clutter of unnecessary cables with wireless connections to the Internet, your keyboard, mouse or cell phone. The AirPort Extreme Card already installed on your iMac gives you the freedom of wireless networking from anywhere in your home or dorm -- up to 150 feet from an AirPort Extreme Base Station. Or try AirPort Express with AirTunes to stream your music to your stereo and send documents to your printer.

Your iMac G5 also comes standard with an internal Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) module to wirelessly access many devices that previously required cables. That means you can get an Apple Wireless Keyboard or Mouse to control your iMac from across the room, or sync your cell phone address book while your phone is in your purse, 30 feet away. Impress your friends, confound your enemies -- wireless only looks like magic.

Meet a Beauty with Brains
Every single stunning, flat-panel widescreen iMac G5 comes standard with Mac OS X Tiger, the world's most advanced operating system. Instantly find what you're looking for. Get information with a single click. Mac OS X Tiger delivers more than 200 new features which make it easier than ever to find, access and enjoy everything on your iMac G5.

Enjoy iLife '05
Make a movie of baby's first steps, graduation or wedding, instantly. Just plug in your camcorder and iMovie HD does the rest. Share it with the family via email, the web or DVD with iDVD.(1) Or play it on your HDTV. Download songs from the iTunes Music Store. Make a mix playlist for your next house party or let iTunes deejay by using the Party Shuffle feature. Design your own iPhoto coffee-table book using the photos from your parents' 25th wedding anniversary. Email photos of your graduation to the entire family. Record a song for that special someone in your life -- then burn it to an audio CD as a gift. Play your latest guitar riffs at a party, backed by GarageBand and your Mac. Create a soundtrack for your iPhoto slideshow or iMovie project. Post your iMix of love songs on the iTunes Music Store for the world to enjoy. Back up an entire season of soccer photos on CD or DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dual-Layer DVD Burning, June 12, 2005
By T. Greever "China Horse" (Southern Illinois - United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Should be noted: This iMac comes with a Dual-Layer DVD burner. So it will not only read and write DVD+/-RW - but also will burn dual-layer discs which hold about 8.5 GB in capacity. Amazon does not mention this in the description, but it is in the product manual that can be downloaded.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have to admit I'm a first-time Mac user. After evaluating my needs in a home computer and reviewing what is available, I found the the G5 not only seemed the best choice, but its aesthetics simply were unsurpassed. After a great deal of internal vacillating and some conversations with my Apple-ophilic friends, I bit the bullet and ordered my own G5.

You simply couldn't ask for more "out of the box" functionality. Simply plug in the mouse, plug in the keyboard, plug in the computer, press the button, and you're going. After a couple of weeks, I'm still impressed. I have had to make some transitions from my Windows habits and the nomenclature is a bit different to what I'm accustomed, but this computer does everything I want and then some. Amazingly, I've had absolutely no problems with the errors and frozen programs that I'd simply come to expect with my other computers.

I also purchased the AirPort Express and now am (happily) listening to all my music sent wirelessly from my computer to my stereo and enjoying every minute. I'd expected a headache in making this work, but, again, it's simply out of the box functional. Plug it in, turn it on, and go.

I would recommend this to all my friends, even those addicted to the OTHER type of computer.

My only complaint is that, particularly for new Mac users, it could use more documentation. I bought The Missing Manual for Mac OS X and strongly recommend that if you're a newbie like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living with an iMac G5, July 22, 2005
By Leon W. Blocker "Hoss" (Muscatine, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews
The basics have already been covered, so I am going to share a few tips on living with an iMac G5 20".

1. It is wide, but it is also on the tallish side. Some computer desks may not be compatible with the height. I put shelving in my office before the iMac G5 was announced, and wouldn't you know it - the shelves were installed ONE inch too low. So, double-check your clearances before you bring this monster home.

2. The SuperDrive has ate everything I have ever thrown at it - DVD+r, -r, you name it. So, there are only two considerations on how to feed the beast - money, and time. The iMac doesn't seem to mind cheap or expensive disks, but sometimes cheap quality disks take longer to burn. So if you want to go a little cheaper on disks, be prepared to give up some time.

3. Burnin' rubber. Yep, this is a G5. Would you buy a Corvette to have it sit there and idle? Nosireebob. So the first thing you are going to do when you plug in and boot this bad boy is open the System Preferences, and click on Energy Saver. Click on the options tab and down on the left you are going to click on the pull-down menu next to where it says "processor performance". Set this menu to "Highest" and never look back. I haven't noticed the fan noise is atrocious, and I seem to be free of all problems I hear about other iMac G5 owners who keep their computers on "Automatic".

4. Take every opportunity to make your PC-usin' friends drool. They pretend not to like your Mac, but trust me - on the inside they are eatin' their ever-lovin' hearts out. Do they have anything in their universe even remotely this cool? Nope, and they never will. Plus, they still have to wait nearly 18 months for "Vista"!

5. Three words - killer surround sound. You now have what may be the most killer computer in the known universe, don't botch it now with cheap speakers or (GASP!) running with the internal speakers. Get thee and thine hence and purchase thee mighty, thundering speakers with wattage that bespeaks the power of God! Trust me, you don't want to watch movies on this big, beautiful, extra gi-nourmous widescreen and listen to the built-in speakers. It ruins the effect, and how. Speakers are like cars - there is no such thing as too much power.

So let's recap - measure twice, feed the beast decent disks, warp speed Scotty, rub it in, and crank it a notch or thirty past 11. Do these things, and the iMac G5 will leave a smile on your face a mortican can't erase.
