Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Such a simple idea--yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes places over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes (well, 45-minute episodes if you subtract the commercials). Everything takes place in real time, which means no flashbacks, no flash-forwards, no handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked so things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy. Creator Robert Cochran and his team of writers and directors have done an impressive job of putting the jigsaw together and keeping the tension ratcheted up high, as federal agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) runs around L.A. trying to stall an assassination attempt on an African American presidential candidate and rescue his wife and daughter from the clutches of the Balkan bad guys.

In the second season, Jack is no longer on the government payroll; unfortunately for him, this small fact doesn't seem to matter to the president and the NSA, who call him back in to the CTU and give him 24 hours to infiltrate a terrorist organization that is planning to detonate a dirty bomb in the city of angels. Fans of the original won't be disappointed, as there are more than enough shock moments in the first few hours to hint at the climactic build-up to come, while newcomers can quickly get involved in the lives of Jack and his family.

In the third season--three years after the events of "Day Two"--a vengeful terrorist threatens to release a lethal virus that could wipe out much of the country's population. Jack attempts to broker a deal for the virus involving a drug kingpin, setting the 24-hour clock ticking in a tight, action-packed plot involving a potential traitor in CTU's midst. The intricately woven subplots that are 24's greatest strength are masterfully developed here, and character arcs are equally strong. It's 24's superior casting that overcomes the series' occasional lapses in credibility, and season 3's twists make marathon viewing a nerve-wracking delight. As always, Sutherland anchors the series in the role he was born to play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of excitement for the money, January 29, 2005
As a retiree living on a fixed income, I thought long and hard about spending the money for all three seasons of 24. But when I looked at the product details, I realized I would be getting 72 episodes on 20 discs for about 120 bucks. That is only about $1.75 per one-hour episode. That's a fantastic deal for the most exciting, thrill-packed adrenalin rush possible on television. You can't come close to that much entertainment even by renting the DVDs, or what it would cost in monthly cable or satellite fees. I give this a five-star rating not only for the content, but for the deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Intense!, January 11, 2005
"24" is one of the only primetime TV dramas I hold in high regard. For three whole seasons, and currently working on its fourth, "24" has met my criteria in what I would consider a high quality TV drama. However, it has also surpassed my expectations especially in the areas of suspense and predictability. The show centers itself around the character Jack Bauer, a CTU(Counter Terrorist Unit) Agent, whose job is to protect the United States from any Internal or External Terrorist Attack. The show takes you over the course of a single day (one episode covers one hour of that one particular day) in which Jack has to face a certain threat to national security. For the past three seasons, Jack has already faced the threat of assasination of a presidential candidate(season 1), threat of a nuclear attack on U.S. soil(season 2), and the threat of a nationwide biological attack(season 3). Kiefer Sutherland plays the role of Jack Bauer and does an awesome job in portraying the harsh, cold and relentless personality that Jack is given. But what really gives the show its edge is the level of suspense it has and how each separate event weaves itself into the personal life of Jack. And the show is extremely unpredictable because of the way it manipulates the characters to take on different roles, and who you thought would be the good guy, actually turns out to be the enemy. Sometimes you won't see what's coming until you've seen it all from beginning to end. So if you want suspense, and if you want action, I highly recommend "24".

5.0 out of 5 stars The following takes place between 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., November 27, 2004
By RC1 "Rob" (Cleveland, OH USA) - See all my reviews
24 is one of the best shows ever. For those who have not seen the show It's about counter terrorism. And it takes place in real time over a period of 24 hours. In season 1 federal agent Jack Bauer(Kiefer Sutherland)had to stop terrorists from assisnating senator and presdental cantidate David Palmer. In season 2 Jack Bauer had to stop terrorists from from detonating a nuclear bomb in los angeles. I liked all 3 seasons but in my opinion season 2 was the best. And in season 3 Jack Bauer had to stop bio-terrorists from releasing a deadly virus that could kill most of the american population. Some people have said that the ending to season 3 was anti-cliamatic, but, with out giving anything away, I disagree because you have to take in to consideration everything that happened not just that in that season, but everything that has happened in the previous seasons as well. All and all 24 is a edge of your seat thriller. Get it and you won't regret it.
