An Undeniable Pop Classic!, February 12, 2005
Since November 2004 I've been writing reviews for all of the songs which Sheryl Crow has released as singles in the UK. This order is pretty much the same in other places around the world, beginning with songs from "Tuesday Night Music Club." My favourite era of Sheryl's music was from the singles she released from her self-titled second album in 1996. I wrote reviews for the singles from this album, along with reviews for the singles from the two albums which followed, 1998's "The Globe Sessions" and 2002's "C'mon C'mon."
I was rather happy with the order I was reviewing them in, until suddenly Amazon added "All I Wanna Do!" I had done a search for this single but could not find it anywhere when I was writing reviews for the other singles from her debut album, so I was a bit annoyed that I couldn't find it. Then suddenly, it popped up! I thought it was best that I leave this review to the end when I'd reviewed Sheryl's latest single "Light In Your Eyes." So here it is, my review of All I Wanna Do. The song itself is without a doubt Sheryl's biggest ever hit worldwide. It's simply a pop classic and was actually the first song I ever bought (on tape cassette!) back in 1994. The song really needs no introduction because it's a simply pop song about having fun in life - simple, catchy, radio-friendly and popular amongst millions some 11 years after its release.
The song opens with Sheryl singing "Hit it! This ain't no disco. It ain't no country club either. This is LA!" The guitar is already beginning to start, along with the clapping of hands, before the drums start and Sheryl sings the first verse," All I wanna do is have a little fun before I die, says the man next to me out of nowhere. It's apropos of nothing. He says his name's William but I'm sure he's Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy. And he's plain ugly to me. And I wonder if he's ever had a day of fun in his whole life. We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday in a bar that faces a giant car wash. The good people of the world are washing their cars on their lunch break, hosing and scrubbing as best they can in skirts in suits. They drive their shiny Datsuns and Buicks. Back to the phone company, the record store too. Well, they're nothing like Billy and me, cause..." As far as first verses go, this is rather long and winded, but it's so adorable and very appealing. It tells a story in great detail, and draws the listener in.
Sheryl then sings the first chorus, "All I wanna do is have some fun. I got a feeling I'm not the only one. All I wanna do is have some fun. I got a feeling I'm not the only one. All I wanna do is have some fun. Until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard." Sheryl then sings the second verse, "I like a good beer buzz early in the morning. And Billy likes to peel the labels from his bottles of Bud. He shreds them on the bar, then he lights every match in an oversized pack. Letting each one burn down to his thick fingers before blowing and cursing them out. And he's watching the bottles of Bud as they spin on the floor. And a happy couple enters the bar. Dangerously close to one another! The bartender looks up from his want ads." Sheryl then sings the second chorus, before a funky and carefree instrumental plays. The guitar is so catchy and you can't help but move to this.
Sheryl then sings the bridge, "Otherwise the bar is ours. The day and the night and the car wash too. The matches and the Buds and the clean and dirty cars. The sun and the moon!" Sheryl then sings the chorus over and over until the song gradually ends. The video this song is great and very appealing because I think it's so innocent and young. Sheryl was in her 30's when this song came out, but that doesn't matter because she looks like she's in her early 20's in the video! The woman must defy gravity or something, because she's stunning. The special effect in this video are a bit dire though! The song is easily Sheryl biggest hit ever, and I doubt she'll ever top it. It peaked at No.2 in the US and made the Top 5 in the UK, making Sheryl the superstar she so deserved to be.

So I'm checking into James Taylor, my Sweet Baby James, and for some reason Amazon thinks I should look at Sheryl Crow's navel. What in the world does she have to do with James Taylor? She isn't even in the same league. I'm not blind, and while I'm straight I can conceded she is an attractive woman with a great bod and only a slightly horseface, but, criminey...don't even put her anywhere NEAR James Taylor. She's an opportunist and has nothing of value to say. She is not going to stand the test of time
