4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but beware of installation, July 20, 2005
This Guitarport-Rifftracker setup is a really elegant piece of work. The Guitarport element lets the guitarist emulate a near infinite number of sounds produced by pre-amps and some of the most popular guitar amps and cabinets produced over the last 50 or so years, not to mention the tweaking you can achieve with the virtual preamp and effect settings. The Rifftracker element of the package offers basically a full service recording studio that ties into the Guitarport applications. You can even do rhythm tracks with simulated percussion. The integration of both halves of this package is one of its strong points, as anyone who has tried to mix and match recording sofware with another application that does what Guitarport does can attest.

But you might have problems installing the software, as I did with Windows XP. After going through the installation process with no problems, after rebooting the system Windows didn't recognize the new hardware (Guitarport). Windows posted the pop-up window that mentioned this, and a telltale sign was that the green light on the Guitarport hardware, connected to the USB port, didn't light up, remaining red. If this happens to you, things that Guitarport will suggest will be to (1) unplug and replug the USB cable, (2) reboot the computer, (3)reinstall the software. After trying all these, I found nothing worked. So here's what to do: keep the installation disk in the CD drive, reboot the computer, and when Windows indicates that it has found new hardware, click on the option to have it search for installation software, and direct it to the CD drive. Once you do this, some residual software will hopefully load, and you can continue with the registration and initiation process for the package. After that, things should work normally.

Like I said, this is a really elegant package that every guitar player will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars it rocks, then it rocks some more!, July 10, 2006
dudes! this has got to be the most awesome way to rock out and get a killer bang for your buck.
I bought one a few years ago and it totally kicked major you know what in my small apartment .
I ran the output through my home stereo and it easily could piss off my neighbors.
if you dont have an amp or just want some effects and have either killer computer speakers or a rockin stereo to send the output to I highly recomend this product.
it easily replaces tons of more expensive gear does a LOT for a small package!!
I cant wait to get my hands on another one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Snappy Little Gizmo, September 14, 2007
By J. Kunkel Beidermeyer "Spazmo" (Silver Spring, MD USA) - See all my reviews
I'm a Mac user, and this thing works great. As other have stated, the installation process is not exactly clear - in my setup, I run the speakers from the guitarport rather than the computer itself. You then have to tell the computer to use the guitarport instead of the default speaker outs (it's in the system prefs, under SOUND).

That said - the thing is pretty great, and gives you a lot to play with right out of the box. For a small subscription fee ($6 a month at last check), you get access to a large library of lessons and sounds - really a great thing for studious guitar player. If you choose not to subscribe (first month is free), it still has a good set of sounds, with adjustable settings - it's very versatile.

Note: Good headphones or nice speakers (audio monitors are even better) are required to get the most out of it.

If you're a hobbyist, and don't play on stage, get this instead of an amp. It's a great little gizmo.
