Biography

If you have been to the cinema or watched a DVD in the last 20 years, it's likely you have heard a Hans Zimmer track. Born in Germany in 1957, the keyboard player and writer began his career in the early 1980's electronic bands Ultravox and The Buggles, and with an Italian new wave band Krisma, playing on their third album Cathode Mama.

His real fame came from his film scores; his first big success… Read more in Amazon's Hans Zimmer Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Writer/director James L. Brooks' warm-hearted comedy revolves around the culture clashes spawned when an L.A. family (headed by Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni) take in a Mexican maid (Paz Vega) and her daughter. As he's done for previous collaborations with Brooks on As Good As It Gets and I'll Do Anything, composer Hans Zimmer conjures up a smartly effervescent musical score that stands in stark contrast to the McAction film bombast that has too often made his reputation. His light-hearted, sometimes bittersweet orchestral score tips its cross-cultural concerns from the opening bars of the title track, which sets the delicate flourishes of a solo flamenco guitar against the starched rhythms of a chamber string ensemble. Guitarist and longtime Zimmer collaborator Heitor Pereira furthers that gambit with his self-written "John Comes Home," a delightful cue that cross-pollinates the waltz and tango with deceptive breeziness. Co-stars Cloris Leachman and Ian Hyland close the inviting soundtrack out with a spirited rendition of Gershwin's "They Can't Take Away From Me." --Jerry McCulley

4.0 out of 5 stars Hans, congrats on a job well done, January 16, 2005
Dear Hans,
Thanks so much for the gift that you've given to all of us as film score fans to kick off the year 2005. Spanglish is your most delicate score to date, and it's absolutely fabulous. It's music that really supports the movie rather than distracts from it, making the images and relationships on the screen stronger. I love the way you've fused a Spanish flavor into the romantic orchestra music without making it seem overly obvious or cliched. The score worked for me in much the same way the film did... It began nicely enough, and as it approached the end, it had subtly grabbed at my heart, and I knew all the themes. Then, in your "Bus Stop" finale, when the orchestra really soared in a gorgeous way with them, it was almost enough to make me cry. That may sound a bit wimpy, I know, but it was music I could really feel, it touched me. Thanks. I enjoy the more masculine electronically-enhanced action scores you've done, of course, but it's great to hear you dive into a gentle, light, touching, purely orchestral score. I really believe you've grown stronger and more mature as a composer in recent years. 2003's "Tears of the Sun" was a mixed experiment, but the production values were stunning, I adored the quirky Mathcstick Men, and "The Last Samurai" ranks as one of your career highlights in my mind. "King Arthur" and "Thunderbirds" were also a load of fun. I saw on IMDB you have five (?) films slated for this year. Here's hoping each one of those scores gets a release, I'm sure they'll be worth my money. Thanks again for Spanglish, and for all your great scores. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 masterpieces again!Zimmer read this post!, January 18, 2005
I'm a great Zimmer fan.Since Days of thunder.
In 1997 zimmer composed 3 masterpieces.Peacemaker(please get expanded score)As good as it gets and Prince of egypt.
This past year zimmer do it again.3 masterpieces:
1.King arthur(the best crimson tide-esque score to date. With the best of prince of egypt, backdraft, gladiator and ronin from last samurai)
2-The last samurai(the best the thin red line-esque.Amazing score, but with horrible action parts(some additional arranger failed here eheheh)
3.Spanglish(be best nine months-esque.his clear inpirations the brig track from Road to el dorado and Nyah from spanglish.)
I'm a little bit dissapointed for the use of so many additionals arrangers.Specially in spanglish.Because I want apreciate note by note and Know is composed by Hans. But well...i guess is the price to be a genius like zimmer is.
I hope next year zimmer composed a great score with orchestra for madagascar and i hope the best for batman begins.
But i want make a Wish....."zimmer please leave so many aditional arrangers in your scores.Maybe in this way Golden globoe or oscar will go to your hands"
My favourite zimmer are:Prince of egypt, beyond rangoon,Peacemaker,Last samurai, broken arrow,as good as it gets and k2.
thanks for all your music and I hope some day You put a pic of Zoe and your miniZ's in one of your cd releases.I want to know how beautyfull Zoe is!!!!!!
