4.0 out of 5 stars Baseball Othello, March 21, 2005
By M. Centura (Atlanta) - See all my reviews
BALL OF WAX is the story of Bret Packard, a superstar athlete who undermines his professional baseball team and takes them from the top of the league to the bottom of life itself. Take for example how he strikes a deal with two of his pitcher teammates. Whichever one hits more batters with a pitch wins something of great value (saving his job or signing a big contract).

From there it just gets worse. One young guy is forced to cheat on his wife. Meanwhile, something is done to the team manager, because he becomes very cryptic and ill. This is one of the film's problems (I like to think of them as "challenges" :)) because it is not obvious what is going on. But it is also what makes BALL OF WAX intriuging.

There is a great scene in a supermarket that says it all about this movie. Two characters (the team manager and the wife of Bret Packard) run into each other and each of them tries to say something to help the other one. But instead both just end up a mess, like Bret Packard is right there torturing them. Even though he's not there his evil schemes have infected everyone so much.

Not for everyone, but very melancholy and effecting.

5.0 out of 5 stars a home run (inevitable baseball pun), March 11, 2005
and you thought barry bonds was a bastard! brett packard deserves to be one of cinema's classic villains: he takes on the sport of baseball and singlehandedly destroys it. this is a seriously creepy movie. it's not what i was expecting (hardly any violence), but it's still one of the most evil movie experiences i've had in a while. and hands-down the darkest sports film ever made. check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take me out from the ball game, March 11, 2005
By Kyla Grey "Ky" (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
If you like psychologically driven movies, then this is the movie for you! Bret Packard terrifed me. He is intelligent, handsome and possesses the evil of that which is at its best, darkly subhuman. Unfortunately though on most levels one can identify and see the falling-from-grace aspect that this character continously and willing accepts and projects upon the ill-fated participants in his life. For Bret Packard life is truly only a game and for the rest, life becomes a living hell.
