Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Following on from his highly acclaimed debut Len Parrott's Memorial Lift, Baxter proves that this was no fluke. His new album Floor Show sounds like it was recorded in St Paul's Cathedral, with vocals added in the whispering gallery. Narratively, it's seems to be about a disintegrating relationship, although this is no confession booth cupboard emptier. Guitars float like ectoplasm, Wurlitzer's spin beneath mirror balls, summoning the presence of spectral beings, swaying to luxurious, narcotic music that predates trip hop by a good sixty years. Stand-out tracks include the single 'Lisa Said', 'Cocaine Man and the wonderful 'Francesca's Party. The album was produced by Baxter, Nick Terry and mixed by Craig Silvey (The Coral, Magic Numbers) in West London in the winter of 2004 / 2005. The band are Damon Reece on drums and Mike Mooney on the electric guitar- both former members of clean living combo Spiritualized. Rough Trade. 2005.

4.0 out of 5 stars Proof That Baxter Is The Better Dury, October 22, 2005
By raydoast (California) - See all my reviews
Just Great! The second CD by Baxter Dury puts him firmly on his own musical feet and takes him permanently out of the shadow of his famous father, Ian Dury of the Blockheads. Dad was famous for rauchous anthems like "Sex and Drugs and Rock N' Roll". Baxter is much more understated and broody, more mature, more thoughtful and alas (for him), not really commercial. This music is too high for the masses. "Floorshow" has collaborators from Spiritualized, but it has that same dreamy, stony, psychedelic feel that Baxter's first "Len Parrot's Memorial Lift" had with members of Portishead. Melancholic, isolated, lonely lyrics, very British...ironic and clever but not depressing, stories about other people on drugs...and he has the street creds to write it. His music is like the best of other people: Wire, Joy Division, early Pink Floyd, Thunderclap Newman, John Lennon, the psychedelic side of Ween or Supergrass. He has found a retro style that is in no way derivative. Trancy vocals on an understated but driving beat with catchy rhythm, psychedelic guitars and synthetic effects that create an atmosphere condusive to what I refer to as "zoning out". When you listen to this for the first time, you'll immediately listen to it again and again...it's that good. Then you'll run to get his first album and the EP "Oscar Brown", they're all equally good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophmore Effort Surpasses His Debut, July 16, 2007
By Z.K Butler (Salton Sea, Ca. United States) - See all my reviews
Although, it's comparing apples and oranges. This finds Dury treading Shoegaze territory while never sacrificing that psychedelic haze. A very sspecial artist. Fans of Spiritualized, Mojave 3, Pink Floyd and [later]The Flaming Lips will feel right at home here.
