Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The 15th production from Montreal's Cirque du Soleil expands upon the troupe's willful, cutting edge redefinition of the traditional circus, yet scales it down to an intimate, erotic cabaret. An exploration of human love and sexuality in all its conflicted splendor, Zumanity leans heavily on its musical score for narrative and sultry mood, and composers Simon Carpenter and Robbi Finkel have essentially created an erotically-charged pop-musical suite whose eclectic styles and disparate ethnic roots underscore the show's pan-sexual intrigues. The spare "Mio Bello Bello Amore" anchors the production's intimacy and often bittersweet tone via the torch-song pleadings of Anna Liani, before the dark, orchestral-rock conceits of "En Zum" and "Wind" quickly expand a musical tack that comes to eventually encompass even the chamber string ensemble elegance of "Meditation" and soulful "Piece of Heaven." There's something for nearly every pop music taste here, from arena rock ballads ("Another Man") and Broadway farrago ("First Taste/Do It Again") to ambient-tinged cool ("Water Bowl," "Per Sempre"), house-savvy grooves ("The Good Thing"), the teasing "Tickle Tango" and "Fugare"'s compelling, R&B/alt.metal fusion. --Jerry McCulley

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better...., April 11, 2005
I am a true cirque du soleil fan, and have been following all their soundtracks up to this point and am excited and much looking forward to their future releases...and have loved all their soundtracks up til this one. I don't like the fact that 95% of this recording is vocal. I miss just having the beautfiul insturmental music just drift through your ears. Not enough of it to make me give it a high score. Though the vocals are good. The music is good...This is not their best album in my book. I am really almost disappointed that I bought this cd, the only thing that saved this cd from being putting it up for sale...is Mio Bella Amore. Beautiful song. Other then that...I don't really like this cd as much as I do the other ones. Though I am looking forward to getting Tapis Rouge. That one sounds really good. As for this, I'll keep it...but it won't be played as much. A little too sexy for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A creative departure..., June 26, 2005
Well, I'm finally at the point where I don't know what to say about a Cirque Du Soleil album. I own every Cirque CD, including those live versions of Alegria and Saltimbanco, which were only released to the employees of the Cirque. The problem with this CD is the sex that was thrown in. Almost every song has a background of moans and screams, almost too much for anyone's taste. But especially songs like "The Good Thing", where the female rapper repeats "I only care about what you got in your pants"...they just put one off. I don't mind the music, it's in my taste, but this CD is R-rated, and I'm not sure if I'm really into it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Expectations, April 12, 2005
I have had the pleasure of seeing Zumanity in Las Vegas and it was both marvelous and quite a departure for Cirque du Soleil. Unfortunately my expectations for this CD were unmet. While I do appreciate the creativity and considerable talent that went into the production of the CD, I had visions of the live show in mind. As a fanatical Cirque du Soleil performances fan, I'm afraid the `Inspired By' compilation just didn't work for me. Cirque du Soliel's live shows leave a fantastic and indelible impression in the mind and imagination of the viewer I doubt seriously that they can effectively capture the essence of the performance with anything less then the original! I will certainly buy the actual `show tunes' CD if it is ever released.
