4.0 out of 5 stars less is more!, June 18, 2005
By lumpsta (owatonna , MN) - See all my reviews
If you are here reading my review but haven't actually seen the movie yet...please take the plunge and buy it, rent it, or borrow it! This is a great movie for horror/suspense/mystery fans. The movie has a certain creepy atmosphere that money just can't buy. The concept is pretty simple and there isn't much new here (excluding the very end!) but the movie itself keeps the viewer interested.
'Soft For Digging' does what much more lavish and expensive films, with some exceptions, fail to do...keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you feeling satisfied.
The film does have it's less than stellar moments, but i would have to say that they are few and far between. most importantly, they don't take away from the overall uneasiness and almost unbearable tension which make up the fabric of the film.
Thumbs up and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I dig this, April 14, 2005
I am lucky enough to have seen this creepy, weird, almost-silent film before. Using strong images and heavy atmosphere, JT Petty creates a mystery that will keep you covering your eyes and wanting to keep watching.

Not your average horror movie, this one depends on what your imagination is capable of filling in alongside some pretty creepy images.

Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Lame Student Film!, November 24, 2007
This "film" (barely over an hour) reminds me of the above-average entries you might see at your local community college student film festival. If this really was a student film, I'd congratulate the director of photography for keeping everything in focus and adequately lit, and I might complement the use of existing locations. Then I'd tell them to go back to the drawing board and try again next year.

The problem is, rather than exploiting the freedom you enjoy as a student film, unencumbered by demographic or profit concerns, Soft For Digging seems to aspire to nothing more than to poorly imitate generic mainstream horror films without improving on them. Jump cut flashbacks? Check. Creepy kid whipping her head around? Check. (Actually she's not even that creepy. Probably the director's cousin or something.)

"But we can't afford to shoot synch sound!"
"Don't worry, we just won't have any spoken dialogue. And when we do, we'll frame it so you don't see the actor's lips move. We'll pretend it was an artistic decision."

There is no excuse for this film being available anywhere other then the media library at the college that provided the grant. AVOID.
