Editorial Reviews

Product Description

In Hollywood, they are the home to killer mummies and booby traps. Now, separate fact from fantasy with THE HISTORY CHANNEL in this exciting tour of the Egyptian Pyramids, which traces the rise of one of the ultimate accomplishments of the Ancient World.

Constructed as tombs for the ancient pharaohs, over 100 pyramids remain in Egypt. Built during a span of well over 1,000 years, they stand as cultural and engineering marvels of staggering proportions. But many facts about these monuments--including the exact methods used to construct them--remain tantalizingly obscure.

Travel back in time as THE HISTORY CHANNEL investigates their evolution, from the first primitive efforts--such as the flat-roofed tombs called "mastaba"--to such magnificent works as the Step Pyramid, Bent Pyramid, and of course, the great masterpieces of Giza: the Necropolis!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and well-done, April 22, 2007
By John M. Cys (Ft. Worth, TX USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The program gives an excellent introduction to the evolution of Egyptian pyramids from the mud-brick mounds called mastaba to the the Great Pyramid of Khufu on the Giza Plateau. A good summary along wirh beautiful vidography and good graphics are given for each basic type. Included is an interesting discussion of the origin of the pyramid shape. Alternate ideas on how the pyramids were built are given; however, those of Martin Isler are emphasized. There is also a segment on the Great Sphinx. Foremost among the on-camera experts is the well-known and respected Egyptologist Zahi Hawass.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only good, December 16, 2007
This only good documentary lacks advanced 3D drawings, animations, and detailed schematics, and it relies too much on a direct talk to camera. There are only a few comparisons presenting pyramids simultaneously. The graphics is old-fashioned, and the style of whole production seems to be a bit dated.
