5.0 out of 5 stars a very pleasant surprise indeed, May 24, 2005
By J. Brady (PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Maybe she realised that pop-punk wasn't the way to go. Maybe she realised just how bad her debut album "Shut Up" really was. Or maybe she's been listening to the Gwen Stefani album a few too many times. Whatever the reason, this new single is not only good, it's shockingly good. It has a cool retro 80's vibe ( without sounding flimsy or "ironic" like most of the electro-clash junk you hear ) a killer hook, and seductive vocals ( thankfully gone is that shrill "punk" singing ). My only concern is that Kelly will suffer the inevitable backlash due to overexposure from her days as a "Reality TV Brat" and this gorgeous, well done single will not get the airplay it rightfully deserves. ( By the way, she looks INCREDIBLE on the cover and in the video. ) And to those who cry "sell- out" because of the seemingly abrupt and complete change in stylistic direction from Kelly's debut album to this single, I can only offer this : if singers like Kelly Clarkston and Pink can go from lite RnB / Dance on their debut albums to mature, harder "rock" ish and ballads material on their second, and not only hold on to their core audience, but actually increase it, then why can't Kelly Osbourne( or anyone else ) drastically change their sound? If that's too much to ponder, and if you really want to just enjoy the tunes, then by all means grab Kelly's new single and do just that.

1.0 out of 5 stars I liked this song better when it was called Fade To Grey, August 22, 2005
By Jennifer C. (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
It seems that Kelly Osbourne has moved on from poser-punk to electro with this latest single. Her producer, who also produces Gwen Stefani and Pink, has decided to filter Kelly's voice through "the machine that makes people sing better", to fool people into thinking she may have actual talent. The term "singing" is of course used rather loosely, as she is practically talking throughout this song.

Oh, did I mention that the melody was entirely ripped off from Visage's "Fade To Grey"? My love of that song is the only reason I'd ever give "One Word" a star, because I can't possibly hate something which Visage technically wrote, even if awful lyrics were inserted in place of the originals. If Michael Bay can be sued for stealing the plot of "The Island" from the writers of "The Clonus Horror", can't Kelly be sued by Billy Currie, Christopher Payne and Midge Ure for unauthorized usage of their song? If I were them, I'd look into getting some lawyers together on this. I honestly mean that. If you look at her album cover, she even ripped off Visage's style there too. Check out the cover for Visage's "The Anvil" and other pictures and tell me she didn't. She cited Godard's "Alphaville" as inspiration for her music video for this single. I believe she's only using it as an excuse to explain why the French language is used in "One Word" without being called on it, seeing as "Fade To Grey" has a woman speaking the lyrics in French throughout, in the exact same fashion.

I'm still amazed she had the gall to go this far to get a hit on the charts. Two thumbs down from me, as I can't possibly support this thievery. Go listen to the real thing, not this pale imitation. If you want something new instead, listen to Ladytron or Adult. or any number of authentic bands who write their own music and don't feel the need to rip off their predecessors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly good, December 17, 2005
By hou_music (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
I was as stunned as everyone else when I first heard that this was Kelly Osbourne. I first heard about this song when one of my friends saw her perform in Manhattan last Spring. I finally heard the song and I have to say - I was truly blown away. It has to be heard to be believed.

"One Word" set a record for being the first track to simultaneously go #1 on the dance/club chart, the dance radio chart, and the single sales chart. I actually went to Tower Records and bought the single, saying to myself I couldn't believe I was buying something from Kelly Osbourne.

As far as this song being ripped off someone else's tune, that I have no idea. It may or may not have happened. Either way, its a great song.

Rumor has it that Kelly has already announced her retirement from the music industry. That just increases the "wow" factor on this single. Now this great remix will go down in history as a one-hit wonder.

By the way, you can go for Kelly's full CD, but you have to get your hands on the full version of the Chris Cox Club Mix, only found on this CD single.

1.0 out of 5 stars Are the writers of "Fade to gray" get their part of the cake?
This is a rip-off. The bad thing is that many young people have never heard abut Visage. I hope a lawsuit against the writer of Kelly's song (Linda Perry). What a nerve!!!!
