Christian auteur hits home run, September 19, 2005
Alex Kendrick had a vision. Well, maybe not in the mystical sense, so let's just say he had a story to tell. The story is about a used car dealer who fits the cliches about that line of work just perfectly. Then one day his conscience starts to nudge him toward a more honest life. He turns his business over to God, and says that since it belongs to Him, He's now responsible for how his new honest approach turns out.
Radical move. And of course it works out for him. It's a sweet story with some hilarious moments, and it becomes that rare low-budget movie that works in spite of its limitations. The "acting" in this film is strictly dinner theater stuff, not much professionalism to it, and the look of the production has nothing on any cheapo cable movie of the week. But the story and its execution are spot on target, and that easily makes up for its shortcomings. In fact, by the end of the film you'll be charmed by its shortcomings. Kind of a "Breaking Away" for 21st century Christianity.
Kendrick wrote, directed, and starred in the film, and also had a hand in the musical score. I believe he had some help from above as well. "Flywheel" has become a breakout hit in the hidden world of Christian cinema, and for good reason. Very nice.

If at all possible, see "Flywheel" FIRST!, October 22, 2006
I have to admit that it was a little difficult watching this movie AFTER having seen "Facing the Giants" on the big screen (3 times in a row!), seeing as how "Facing the Giants" has such extremely high production values & top-notch acting & music & all ...
But, then again, the entire reason I sought the "Flywheel" DVD out (online & I didn't fail to note that it was already sold out in a ton of places ... ), was BECAUSE I loved "Facing the Giants" so much & I couldn't wait to see some of my favorite actors in action again (i.e. Alex Kendrick & the guy who played the vacillating coach [whose name escapes me at the moment] & some others that I had hoped to see again in "Flywheel") ...
I do have to say, though, that the MESSAGE of "Flywheel" is awesome & there are some delightful scenes & brilliant acting scattered throughout & I also must say that I probably enjoyed the "Special Features" disc even MORE than the movie itself, just because it was so interesting to me from a wannabe Christian filmmaker's standpoint ...
And, I might add, if you strip both "Flywheel" & "Facing the Giants" down to their most basic plotlines, then I think you will find essentially the same story told 2 different ways ...
Which is why I therefore recommend, if at all possible, seeing "Flywheel" BEFORE seeing "Facing the Giants," because then you won't be disappointed by the lower production values of "Flywheel" ...
Either way, I think BOTH movies (i.e. "Flywheel" & "Facing the Giants" [whenever it finally comes out on DVD]) are worth having in a family-oriented movie collection.

Wonderful!!!!!!, June 20, 2005
I happened to catch this movie when it was on tv one Saturday and I found that I couldn't turn it off. The message in this movie is so clear and even though it is very low budget, it is very powerful. This man's transformation to a decent man is so moving and believable. It is a feel good movie that even someone who doesn't consider themself "religious" will appreciate and love! You won't be disappointed!!!! :)
