5.0 out of 5 stars PHOTO FINISH, October 13, 2005
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I just about finished Burnout 3:Takedown when--lo and behold!--Burnout:Revenge just so happened to hit the shelves. How convenient!

For those of you who--like me--are still coming off of Burnout 3, I'm going to breakdown the major differences in these two games:

Perhaps the most welcome addition to BR is that you can actually smash into cars FROM BEHIND without crashing yourself! There is a catch to this, though, head-on traffic, sideway's traffic, and hitting an oversized vehicle from behind will still total your car.
On the down side, I think that this feature decreases the challenge aspect by quite a bit. In BO3, if you hit a car, you were done for, so you were either a stellar driver with super-sharp reflexes, or not.

Remember how tired you got in BO3 with the Elimator laps--doing FIVE of them consecutively to win the race? BR has improved the Eliminator races by having instead five 30 second periods. Whoever is in last place at the end of these periods is eliminated. Makes the event much quicker and less tedious.

Racing events have stayed the same, for the most part, but now there are shortcuts. You can win the race without shortcuts, but you're more likely to win if you use them. Note: Your CPU players ALSO use the shortcuts, so watch out!

BO3 had a Face Off event. BR has no Face Off event, but you still win cars like crazy after doing races or outstanding feats.

But BO3 had no Traffic Attack Event like BR does. In this event you intentionally run into traffic--preferably traffic that is going the same way as you, unless you like crashing.

Burning Laps/Preview Laps are pretty much the same in both games, but of course BR has the shortcuts. I have a small complaint with the Burning Laps in BR: Getting a medal in this even is either too easy or too hard. Example: On one track I boosted 90%--if not 100%--of the whole track--without crashing-- and didn't get a gold medal! You almost HAVE TO use the shortcuts to get gold in these events. BUT, on the opposite hand, if you drive, slow as hell, casually, like I did once (in a Preview Lap), with no intention of winning, I still somehow got a Bronze medal.

Ah yes--CRASH MODE. This is where BO3 and BR REALLY differ and this is also where I have my chief--but few complaints--with the game. In BO3, you controlled how quick of a "takeoff" you wanted once the crash event started. If you wanted boost, just bump into the boost icon. Bump into the other icons to multiply your score, etc.
But, in BR, it is much different. You still control how fast you "takeoff", at the beginning of the event, but now you have a bar and by pressing a button you make a meter shoot up. The higher the meter is on the bar, the faster you start. No big deal, a bit more Luck, than Skill, for my taste, but where the BIG PROBLEM is, is that no matter how slow or fast you start, no matter how light or heavy your vehicle is, you ALWAYS swerve uncontrollably to the right or left about two times before you can straighten out! You can not imagine how aggravating this is and how many times you will prematurely crash into guardrails, lightpoles, or other objects.
However, once you get past this annoying part, the crash event is pretty much the same, but without the bonus icons, because you will be doing so much damage anyway you won't need 4x multipliers.

I also sorely miss the presence of a garage to see at a glance all the cars I've won.

But the Carl's Jr. Gut truck is definitely cool to smash into things!

Despite my few complaints, BR is a GREAT game, with LOTS of replay value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, January 1, 2006

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
As a big fan of Burnout 2 and Burnout 3, I was anxious to get the newest entry in the series. However, I was disappointed at some of the choices the programmers made. Let me first state that my favorite part of the previous games was "Crash" mode. In the new game, "Crash" is nowhere near as fun as it was. First of all, you can't simply play "Crash" as a stand-alone game. And as other reviewers have noted, the start mechanic takes away a lot of player control. And crime of crimes, they've done away with the instant replay! Restarting takes way longer than it should, and the crash courses just don't have the same "I gotta do that again" feel that the other games had. In the regular racing mode, some of the obstacles are too hard to see -- you find yourself crashing into things that you didn't know were there. On the plus side, it is indeed fun to rear end cars and knock them out of the way. The graphics and car handling are excellent. My advice: if you're new to the series, buy Burnout 3 instead. If you're a fan of the series, you should rent this before you buy it. If it was $20 (as it will be 6 or 8 months from now), it'd be a no brainer purchase. At full price, I'd have to say it's not a good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness Is For Losers! Revenge Is The Way To Go!, November 21, 2005
By Unnatural Disaster (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This is the newest installment of the Burnout series. And in my opinion, it is the best.

1. Although it doesn't have single event mode, you can still play a single event by going to the world tour mode and choosing any event in that, it's practically the same thing.

2. This game brings new things into the Burnout series, just as each game before this one has. In this game, the new parts include Traffic Attack, Shortcuts, and several different types of cars. Some cars in this game will even go 210 mph.

3. Traffic Attack and Checking Traffic is an extremely fun thing to do. The Traffic Attack events aren't amazingly fun, but just having the ability to "check" traffic (Which is ramming cars, that are travelling in the same direction as you, from behind and sending them into your opponents, which in turn crashes the opponent.) is very, very fun!

4. The shortcuts are one of the best new additions to the Burnout Series in my opinion. It makes the game so much faster and extreme. The shortcuts aren't really that short though, when you come out of them you usually end up only a little bit more ahead of the opponents that didn't take the shortcut, but sometimes that's all that matters. There are so many shortcuts in the tracks that if you were to race at one track twice in a row, you probably would not have gone the exact same way.

5. Some shortcuts can send you through the air which could make you land on your opponents which is a new takedown called a Vertical Takedown. There's no greater feeling than landing on your opponent from 3 stories up and watching them crash at 210 mph.

6. The tracks are also now built for battling. There are a lot more obstacles in this game which increases it's fun by a lot!

7. The graphics have improved some from the previous game. A brownish-orangish tint was added to the coloring which makes the game seem more realistic. Also damage physics to cars has greatly increased. The cars that crash are completely destroyed!

8. Another new thing in the game is that you are given a rank and once you beat a certain amount of the game, you are given a higher rank and so on, until you get to Elite.

9. The only thing I don't like about this game is that there is a golf-swing-like beginning in crash mode. You have to time the the bar on the left of the screen just right or you might blow your engine. It's okay though, it's very easy to do.

10. Oh, another thing I don't like is the soundtrack, but I usually listen to my own music while playing videogames anyway.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play it right now.
