Definately An Improvement Over Last Year's Game, But..., October 6, 2005
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
NBA Live 06 still could have been much better. I've been buying NBA Live for a while, and was always pleased with the improvements over the previous version until NBA Live 2005. Basically the only noteworthy addition was the Dunk contest, and return of the 3 point contest, but as you should be able to tell, that wasn't enough of an upgrade for $50.
Pros:
+Freestyle Superstar Mode - Easily the biggest improvement on this years game, and what sets it apart from all of the NBA Live's before. This feature just makes the game much more like NBA basketball, where the stars gave the ability to completely take over a game, and their abilities are much more defined.
+Play Against Friends & Online Play - This game is extremely fun multiplayer, as most of the NBA Live series has been. The online mode is also one of the best parts of the game, if you have Xbox Live.
+Player Development (In Dynasty) - Haven't used this that much yet (because I don't really like the dynasty mode at all), but what I've seen from it has been impressive. Definately one of the better features.
+Improved Graphics & Gameplay - These aren't huge improvements, but they definately add something.
+Soundtrack/Sound In General - While it looks like 'NBA 2k6' has a better soundtrack (Redman, Little Brother, Aesop Rock, Hierohlyphics, The Roots, Blackalicious...Come on, it's not fair), EA surprised me with this one, coming with a good soundtrack. Nice tracks from Jurassic 5 (& a new one from Chali 2na's debut), Afu-Ra, Chamillionaire, Q-Tip & others. The commentary and in game sounds are also top notch.
Cons:
-Dynasty/Season Mode, And Playing Against The Computer In General - For some reason, this just isn't much fun in this game. First, to make it the least bit entertaining, you have to raise the difficulty level, and after that, it still isn't very good at all. If you're looking for this in a basketball game, I would definately reccomend 'NBA 2k6' over this.
-Rebounding - The rebounding just flat out sucks in this game. Period.
-Unrealisticness/Too Fast Paced - Now, while this is a part of the Live series, it can still be viewed as a problem for us who want a good, realistic game of basketball. That's why I'm probably going to end up getting NBA 2k6 when it becomes $20.
-Abuse Of Superstar Abilities - This isn't a huge problem, but it can get annoying when the defensive stopper on the other team is getting 20 steals a game.
All in all, I would highly reccomend this game to anyone who likes playing basketball games with friends (and does it often), and owners of Xbox Live that need a good basketball game. I would also reccomend it to basketball fans with some money to spend (Unfortunately this game is priced at $50), and longtime fans of the Live series that might have been dissapointed the past couple of years. For someone that wants a deep, realistic basketball game, though, I would say you should get NBA 2k6 over this.

2.0 out of 5 stars
Live 06 bricks on Xbox 360, November 29, 2005
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
A Sports' NBA Live 06 was unimpressive and felt dated on the current generation consoles. They decided to go for another shot with Live 06 on the Xbox 360, and I'm disappointed when I say that there's still a lot to desire with this version of the game.
When you read this, you're reading it correctly: there are two gameplay modes in NBA Live 06. Two. There's Play Now, where you play an exhibition-style game with an NBA team against any other NBA team. Then there's Season, where you play through a season with an NBA team. After a season, you're finished with the game. There's no Dynasty mode, so you can't even continue after a single season. Needless to say, this game is so lacking in features that it's difficult to care much for it. There aren't even Freestyle moves that were bragged about in the current-generation versions. There is absolutely nothing creative about this game, spare the interactive main menu.
At least the gameplay on-court isn't bad. The controls are tight on the Xbox 360 version, which is a problem I had with the current-gen editions. There's a good balance between three-pointers, mid-range shots, and lay-ups and/or dunks. There aren't any stupid fouls or questionable shots. I only have two gameplay-related gripes. The first is that the free throw system is far too difficult to get a feel for. In order to shoot a good shot, you have to slowly drag the right thumbstick down, then slowly move it up. If there is much movement inbetween the up/down motion, you'll almost always brick the shot. The second problem is the camera. I'm pretty disgusted with the camera, actually. It's no matter which camera configuration you choose, almost every one of them is too far away from the court. I can't count the number of fast breaks I had to slow down in order to let the camera catch up to the action. Also, there were many times where I was under the basket, fighting other players for a rebound, only to lose the battle because I couldn't see what was going on.
This camera problem goes alongside some of the graphic issues that I have. NBA Live 06 is a beautiful game, no dobut. The courts look great and the player models are fantastic. There is a ton of detail, from player faces to crowd animation. The only problem is that everything nice starts to look ugly when animation frames start dropping and the frame rate drops to a disgusting level. Not only that, but some of the animations are still very unrealistic--I've seen players go for layups when they were at least a dozen feet away from the basket. I've seen players run one way, magically turn around on a dime, and complete a windmill dunk. I'd have thought that in a basketball game where the visuals were obviously such a large focus that maybe the animation would have been a little smoother and realistic.
Overall, NBA Live 06 still isn't on par with other basketball games. The gameplay still needs a few touches, there obviously needs to be more to do in the game, the glitchy animations and stuttery frame rate both need to be fixed, and I hope I never see such bad camera angles again. Even with these gripes, if you liked NBA Live on other consoles, I'd recommend that you rent Live 06 for the Xbox 360 to see the beginning of the next generation for this franchise.

EA will never get it right, October 18, 2005
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Will they?
Pros:
Nice graphics
nice superstar abilities
Don't have to purchase all jerseys since it's not alot
Marv and Steve Kerr doing comentary
online mode is pretty cool
Cons:
-Horrible rebounds:(I mean it's a miracle whenever I get a rebound offensivly or defensivly. On superstar, this makes winning impossible, on all star I get only 15 rebounds and the computers get 45, and when I win, I win by small margines. Even if I got Tim Duncan and Nazir Mohommed jumping for the ball, magicly Earl Boykins ends up with the ball. I mean come on.)
-Clutch time stupidity: EA always has this as a burden, the computer can be down by 13 with 2:00 minutes to go, then all of a sudden it's all up to a final possesion.
-Realistic to unrealistic:(This game is was to silky smooth fast paced, and it keeps the same style of the previous live, unfortunatly the pace of 2005 was more suited for this style)
-Match everything:(Because of rebounding, it was like the computer would score on every possession despite I shot 57% and they shot 37%. It's just an unfair advantage. If I shot that low, The other team would blow the game wide open.
NBA Live 2006 is just another EA attempt at trying to make a better NBA 2K, and they once again suck major bottie crack at doing it. This is just flat out sad. Out of all NBA's since the new freestyle controls, I found the first one NBA live 2003 to be the best. That game was pure freestyle, and more power to the people. Every live after that tended to go into the computer's direction, and if that's so, then NBA live 2006 has succeded. The only fun I have is playing against friends or online, but never against the computers. So unrecamendale unless you love live to death.
peace
