From the supplier: A structural criticism examines the genre to which Luisa Valenzuela's 'Novela negra con argentinos' purportedly belongs. The development of the crime and detection genre of writing is discussed to clarify Valenzuela's point of departure. The title alludes to the apparent framework, the 'roman noir,' and begins conventionally enough to fit the framework. But as the story evolves, the genre is subverted: the shift in focus from the specific crime to the darker crimes in Argentina's recent history, the 'guerra sucia' or Dirty War, as well as the dark side of the foreign city, New York.
