Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
"I know you think you know me better than that," sneers Oscar-nominated actress Juliette Lewis on the title track of her band's debut album, and I guess we did. For while the charismatic star of Cape Fear and What's Eating Gilbert Grape has often revealed a smidgen of unconventionality (coupled with aspirations to start a rock band), this vigorous cache of defiance-spewed punk rockers and memorable ballads comes from way back in left field. The simple comparisons have Lewis handpicking eccentricities from P.J. Harvey and sporting the brawling passion of Patti Smith. But a more suitable parallel for her aching octave assault is the late Mia Zapata (from Seattle's Gits), most notably on the sultry "This I Know" and 100 mph heartbreakers "So Amazing" and "Money in My Pocket." Sure, she has a ways to go to catch Harvey and Smith, but compared to rocking Hollywood comrades Minnie Driver and Keanu Reeves, Juliette & the Licks' foray into rock and roll is a natural born killer. --Scott Holter

4.0 out of 5 stars This is good!, May 17, 2005
Yes it's the actress now being a singer. Well not really actually. Juliette Lewis has been singing for a while now and does it well. In natural born killers she did a nice little acapella of a track titled "born bad" and on the film strange days she did a great rendition of pj harvey's hardly wait. I would even say it's better than the original!

So I've been dying to hear her own material and I gotta admit that I was a bit disappointed with the EP as I found it too eightish rock sounding. The EP fell into my hands and easily slipped away.
But the album that I am now reviewing is good. Actually pretty damn good! I'm glad i gave her the chance again as I know she's good musically. This is the best of modern rock with a classic touch.

Rock on Juliette!

To be honest, I prefer "Like a Bolt of Lightning" to this one, but this is an excellent album! I really took a liking to a few of the tracks, and play those all the time, because I gotta hear 'em again! I look forward to the next album, I'll be the first in line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving this CD..., June 10, 2005
By RaveGyrl (Chicago, Illinois) - See all my reviews
When I hear about any actors/actresses trying to be singers I immediately start to cringe, but I didn't do that when I heard Juliette Lewis had her own band. She's like a regular guest on the Conan O'Brien show and is always funny and interesting and even sang on the show a couple of times. So needless to say I was excited. I have listened to it 3 times today. My favorite song is "I Never Got To Tell You What I Wanted To". What also pleased me not only does this CD rock out it has it has a couple soft moments too, I didn't have to skip one song which we do so frequently nowadays. You're Speaking My Language is an awesome listen, can't wait to see them live.
