From the supplier: The launching of the Human Genome Project in 1990 encouraged entrepreneurs to launch their own genomics companies. One company that has succeeded in this field is Human Genome Sciences (HGS). Led by former Harvard Medical professor William Haseltine, the company has already isolated and characterized 95% of all human genes since its inception in 1992, supported considerably by advances in robotic and computer technology. HGS generates income from its drug pipeline and database lease arrangements. It has filed patent applications that describe the medical use of more than 5,500 newly discovered human genes that may likely provide it with a formidable competitive edge against bigger rivals. Haseltine, in an interview, noted that his company's fortunes rest on the ability to translate its revolutionary technology into a set of commercially sound products.
