Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description Samsung's high-definition HL-R4667W DLP projection TV is loaded with exclusive, video-enhancing features and all the connections you need to make HD viewing as simple and as flexible as possible. The set's broad, 46-inch screen is configured in a 16:9 aspect ratio that matches the dimensions of today's HDTV broadcasts and most DVD movies. And, measuring just 43 inches across and a mere 14 inches deep, the set's ultra-slim bezel and lightweight design enable it fit where other projection and big-screen sets won't.

Samsung's DNIe™
Samsung's revolutionary DNle™ (click for demo) technology offers digital perfection in naturally presented, crystal-clear images that uncover even the most minute detail.

Motion Optimizer
Fast-moving images are optimized to produce more natural-looking motion, thus reducing video noise or blurring.

Contrast Enhancer
Brightness and contrast levels are enhanced for deeper, richer blacks with greater detail and more natural whites.

Color Optimizer
Colors are reproduced with a more lifelike realism, whites are more accurate, and skin tones are given a more natural hue.

Detail Enhancer
DNIe analyzes video signal elements to produce sharper detail, clearer image separation, and more natural edge transition.
Topping its stellar features is a built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner, so you'll be set to pull free high-definition programming right off the airwaves. The set is outfitted for easy digital cable reception, too, with a CableCARD slot that saves the hassle and bulk of using a stand-alone set-top box.

The secret to this DLP (Digital Light Processing) projection set's quality is its Emmy-winning technology from Texas Instruments. Samsung has combined its proprietary Cinema Smooth Gen-5 HD light engine and advanced optic enhancements with a single, 0.55-inch digital micromirror device (DMD) capable of generating high-definition video images with film-like resolution, deep blacks, and robust colors. Cinema Smooth enhances brightness while ensuring an astonishing 2,500:1 contrast ratio.

Texas Instruments' DMD panel is immune to the factors that can cause other displays to deteriorate with use, imparting a longer life expectancy than that of cathode ray tube (CRT) sets, plasma display panels, and liquid crystal display systems (LCD, LCoS, HTPS). A host of advanced digital interfaces and video inputs make non-issues of connectivity challenges and future proofing.

A 3D Y/C digital comb filter dramatically reduces image-edge artifacts while improving transition detail, and the set's HD ultra-fine-pitch (.155 mm) screen further clarifies images, especially when you're viewing high-resolution sources like DVD and HDTV.

Samsung's Cinema Smooth Film Mode 3:2 Pull Down correction circuitry addresses digital distortion in 480i (interlaced) video signals generated from 24 frames-per-second film. Finally, Samsung DNIe video enhancer (Digital Natural Image engine) works with all analog NTSC and wideband video signals for improvements in contrast, white level, and picture detail, incorporating digital noise reduction to improve lower-quality sources.

The set offers digital-video inputs in 2 formats. A DVI-HDTV interface with HDCP copy protection permits all-digital rendering of video without the losses associated with an analog interface, and an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) jack channels both digital audio and video to simplify connections with newer DTV set-top boxes and DVD players by reducing hookups to just a single cable and plug.

Other inputs include dual HDTV component-video inputs (480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i) for high-definition satellite receivers, HDTV tuners, and HD cable boxes with component video outputs (Y, Pb, Pr); 3 each composite- and S-video inputs; and 2 RF coaxial inputs for antennas or older VCRs or cable boxes. An audio/video output--including an optical digital-audio output for passing Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround programs to a compatible AV receiver--simplifies hookup with external devices.

A 15-watts-per-channel (x2) audio system with a pair of speakers comes with built-in SRS TruSurround XT, which simulates compelling surround sound through any stereo playback system, including headphones and the TV's speakers.

Last but far from least, onboard 2-tuner PIP with side-by-side split-screen viewing grants convenient simultaneous viewing of 2 TV programs, while a supplied universal remote control permits control of the TV, a DVD player, a VCR, and a tuner/surround receiver.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, and a superior value, December 12, 2005
By CJames (Georgetown, TX United States) - See all my reviews
I'm one of those guys who has to know I'm making the right decision before pulling the trigger (especially on a big-ticket item, so big that I felt ill just thinking about it), so I researched the HDTV market ad nauseam before buying the 4667w. If you're reading this, you probably are, too, so the bottom line is this: unless you're a hardcore videophile with a trained eye, it is unlikely you will find anything wrong whatsoever with this TV. Even though I occasionally see the rainbow effect in high-contrast situations (e.g. white text on a black background), it is not enough to distract from the screen size and quality for my dollar that I got. My wife doesn't see the rainbows, and chances are you won't either, but even if you do, it is only occasional and not distracting in the scheme of things.

PROS:

1. Excellent picture and color reproduction, especially with component video. NOTE: The factory settings for the various modes have the contrast cranked up much, much higher than it should be, especially for a darkened room. If whites look painfully bright, dial down the contrast to 50 or so.
2. Video games look jaw-droppingly good. It's like playing a different game entirely.
3. Value. We paid $1800. A LCoS or plasma of comparable size is 3-5 times as much for a marginal improvement, if any.
4. Menus are easy to understand and navigate.
5. Weight. The whole thing weighs less than 70 pounds.

CONS:
1. Vertical viewing angle. Much has been written about this, and I admit that standing a few feet in front of the set, looking down, makes the picture very hard to see. This bothered me, then I thought about how often I watch TV standing a few feet in front of the set. Never.
2. Lag on video games. Chances are, you will notice a considerable lag playing games, at least at first, especially with shooters. If you run component cables from your system and assign "Game" to the Component mode on the TV (recommended by Samsung), the lag becomes ALMOST nonexistent. It will still be there a little no matter what you do. I think it's because of Samsung's DNIe filter, which you can't disable.
3. Standard analog TV looks worse than on a CRT. Compared to HD, it looks awful anyway, but one drawback of DLP is its SDTV performance. Deal with it. If you're planning to watch a lot of SDTV, why would you buy this TV in the first place?
4. Occasional rainbow effect. Most people don't notice, but even if they do, it doesn't detract.
5. Built-in speaker is just okay. We haven't gotten a DTS receiver yet, so have just been using the TV speaker for everything, and it ain't the greatest, but in all likelihood you'll have a whole separate audio system anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it, June 24, 2005
By HDTV lover (Woodinville, Wa) - See all my reviews
I went from an old 27" CRT to this 46" DLP. It's great, except it encourages me to watch too much TV.

The picture is just awesome; it can even be too bright. There are 4 picture settings, and i've toned down the color with the "movie" setting. DVD's via component in look great, and HDTV (720p) even better.

I was predisposed to dislike a rear projection set, I think from years of seeing those very beamy, poorly converged, sets. But this DLP changes all that. There is no convergence issue, the picture is extraordinarily sharp, and the set has a reasonably wide horizontal viewing angle. The vertical viewing angle is narrow, but unless you want to watch the TV standing up, it's not been an issue.

I've never seen this "rainbow effect" that some talk about as characteristic of DLP.

I also like that there is no "burn-in" issue, when 4x3 TV is viewed. I experimented with forcing it to 16x9, but don't like the distortion. I leave regular TV as 4x3.

The sound is also much better than expected.

What could be better?

The built in TV Guide, which seems like a nice feature, doesn't seem to work for me. It's supposed to download listings, but constantly says it can't find a match for my comcast cable and zipcode. Switching between the PIP screens requires going through a menu.

Overall, if you can't tell, I'm delighted.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Service Problems, April 9, 2006
I am VERY dissatisfied with the on going current repair problem.

11 days after March 30th the repairman arrived with the long awaited lamp that Samsung diagnosed was the problem.

The lamp did not repair the TV. The serviceman says the ballast is bad, will have to order one. ANOTHER WEEK OR SO!!!

The serviceman said he was told by his office not to leave the new lamp in TV even a ballast was going to be replaced.

My first complaint is why not leave the new lamp in TV to protect the new ballast and save Samsung and me another service call in the near future for replacing the lamp which is sure to fail soon.?

My second complaint is why can't you keep the service agencies supplied with common spare parts that usually break down.?

I am becoming very unhappy with Samsung and the repair process.

Well here it is April 18th. The serviceman made another stop this time with a new lamp and ballast. GUESS WHAT NO FIXIE!!

He said now it will have to go to the shop. Probabaly another week or so. I called Samsung and they said "We have to allow 30 days from the 1'st service call and then if not repaired they will send me a new TV. Gee I wonder if I could ask for a different model as I found out I have the older Osram light engine where bulbs are outrageously priced. If you ever buy one of these be sure you have the Phillips light engine inside or has the lamp replacement listed as ....0826A on the side of the TV which indicates a Phillips engine.
