In the 1950s Professor Claus Riedel discovered the shape of a wine glass affects the wine's bouquet and taste. He then began to produce glasses in his Austrian studio designed to enhance the flavors of different types of wine, with the bowls varying in size and shape. He emphasized clean, unadorned designs with form following function, and his creations have been placed in collection of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Glass pioneer Claus Riedel would have celebrated his 80th birthday on February 19, 2005. The 9th generation of a glassmaking dynasty founded in 1756, Claus Riedel brought the company back from the brink of extinction after World War II when in 1956 he established the Riedel Glassworks in Kufstein, Austria. His legacy is his glass creations changed the way that wine is appreciated today. Georg Riedel, the current President of the company, has released this classic design of Claus Riedel's to honor the memory and artistry of his late father. These collections are machine blown on state of the art equipment. This innovative and proprietary technology produces glass that is virtually indistinguishable from its hand-blown counterpart.
