Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes, Tunnels and Sacks
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Inexpensive tent., September 19, 2005
I had a coleman tent of a similar design for about 7 years until the zippers gave out. This new design makes several improvements: 1. The supporting poles fit into a continuous sleeve...previously you had to thread each through two sleeves. 2. previously you had to tie the tent to the supporting poles at the top, now the continuous sleeve eliminates the ties. 3. The fly is now supported by a single pole over the top. 4. The rainfly appears more impervious to rain...as I had no drips from it in 4 or 5 days or showers.

However, all was not happiness. I was camping for several days in gentle showers. The 4 corners at the bottom where the walls meet the waterproof floor all weeped significantly. When I had a drier day, I tried to seal the seams at the corners. Another day of rain showed that I had successfully sealed the two back corners, but not the front.

Bottom line: very easy to assemble, but may need some seam sealing to keep out the rain.

2.0 out of 5 stars This tent has serious problems, July 15, 2006
I read the previous review from Randy before buying this tent, but my father is an experienced camper and well-armed with seam sealer and waterproofing stuff, so I decided to give it a try. The price is certainly right. We sealed it up and sprayed on some of the waterproofing before leaving on our trip, and my family admired the tent. It's nice-looking and easy to set up. The one thing I didn't like is that there is no way to "close" the windows on the side--it's just the mesh. Definitely no good for colder weather!

Our first night camping in the tent was fine. It's the perfect size for two people and gear.

It rained on our second night. At first everything was fine. I sighed with relief. The seam sealer had worked! But then... drip, drip. The corners started leaking, one drip at a time...and the drips started adding up to pools in each corner. We had some plastic cups in the tent and actually propped them in the corners to catch the drips! That solved the corners, but then the (seam-sealed!) fly began to leak. Not the whole thing, just the part where there's velcro sewn in--the velcro wraps around the poles to hold the fly in place. The stitching on this area was loose and poorly done.

The corner leaks were bad, but the fly leaks were far worse. As I mentioned earlier, there is no tent material to cover the "windows;" it's just the bare mesh. So when the seams on the fly started leaking where the velcro is, those drops simply fell onto the mesh windows and into the tent. This made for a cold, wet, miserable night.

The weather cleared in the morning. In the dawn light, I saw that part of the door zipper had ripped at the seams. After two nights of light use! We barely opened the door at all, as it was raining and we were huddled inside, or seeking shelter elsewhere. We eventually had to put a tarp over the top to keep the rain out. The rip was large enough that some bugs found their way in.

I just finished filling out my return form. This is a poorly constructed and leaky tent; don't be seduced by the low price or the Coleman name.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay tent, December 12, 2006
By J. Hamker "jkh" (Wichita, Kansas) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This tent is an okay tent for the price. Sturdy construction- held up in 40-50mph wind gusts at lake in southern Kansas! Only problem is with WINDY, rainy weather- Coleman changed how they make tents in regards to how low screen comes down on the sides of the tent- I guess they lowered it for ventilation which is good in hot, dry weather, but bad in windy, stormy weather. I will not buy another Sundome tent- will buy other Coleman products though :)
