Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Michael & Me is as impassioned--and just as loaded--as Michael Moore's Oscar-winning documentary Bowling for Columbine, a film to which nationally syndicated radio and TV talk show Larry Elder takes great exception. Through interviews with gun-control critics, Second Amendment proponents, and just "normal" and "responsible" people, Elder makes an emotional and provocative case for "personal responsibility" and an ordinary citizen's right to own a gun for self defense. There are several through-the-looking-glass stories that may give gun-control advocates pause (a British man is sentenced to life in prison for shooting and wounding one intruder, and is sued by another he wounded). Elder scores some hits in challenging Moore's questionable methodology, but it's overkill to accuse him of being "anti-American." A lame animated sequence, in which Elder ambushes a speechless Moore (that'll be the day!) on "The Woprah Infrey Show" is a total misfire. Both men are seen to better advantage in clips from an actual Elder-Moore confrontation. Elder, to his credit, allows dissenting voices to state their beliefs without making them look foolish. --Donald Liebenson

Product Description

A JOURNEY TO IRAQ is a unique documentary, showing a side of the War on Terror that is rarely seen in mainstream media. This documentary gets up close and personal with Iraqi refugees who fled the country due to religious persecution, the faithful Christians who answered God's call to help spread Christianity to the Arab and Kurdish people, and one Missionary struggling to establish what could be the most important print shop in the Middle East.

Establishing the first Christian printing press in the Kurdish territory of Northern Iraq is more than difficult - it's almost unthinkable. But Missionary Tim Comer discovers that in the word's newest Republic, the power of Islam leaves little room for Christian Missions, and the only way to get things done is God's way.

Under the regime of Saddam Hussein, Christianity was mildly tolerated at best, and certainly was not encouraged. With the American and allied invasion came the prayers of Christians worldwide, as well as the power to establish political, personal and religious freedoms for the Iraqi people. For the first time in their lives, countless Iraqis discovered acceptable alternatives to Islam.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, comprehensive overview to the 2nd Amendment debate., October 29, 2005
Larry Elder gathers input from an impressive collection of historians, lawyers, criminologists, and scholars on the role of guns in America, including comparisons of other nations' relationships with guns and gun control. In addition to the erudite speakers interviewed by Elder, there were numerous man-on-the-street interviews which reflected the knowledge, ignorance, and opinions of Americans about gun rights. Also fascinating were the insights of reformed gang leaders and their anecdotal experiences and views on guns and crime.

The American public ranges from ignorant to sharply astute in their understanding of our Constitution, our nation's gun laws, and gun statistics. Elder dispels misunderstandings, clarifies realities, and reveals the plain-spoken truth of guns. The result shows guns to be tools (dangerous in the hands of criminals and life-saving in the hands of those who would deter them); shows that these tools are used far more to protect than to harm; explains that even if you could undo the 2nd Amendment and remove guns from the law-abiding, you'd still have a thriving black-market abundantly providing them to the lawless; and unambiguously explains that, love them or hate them, it is our Constitutional right to own guns.

I confess a bias in reviewing this documentary: I came into the 1990's a gun-hater, but found my opinions irrevocably altered over the course of that decade by exactly the kind of hard facts compiled and introduced here by Larry Elder. So be warned, those of you who think you are faithfully married to the ideals of gun control: this movie can alter your thinking, it can lead to the kind of knowledge and understanding that, once achieved, can never be undone.

My one beef with this documentary is the title, which I thought was slightly misleading. I had hoped for a greater confrontation between Elder & Michael Moore, though in all fairness, it's been so long since I saw "Roger & Me" that I don't remember whether Moore succeeded in any better of a showdown between himself and Roger Smith in that movie. Fortunately for America, Larry Elder never had to ambush Alzheimer's patients to score pathetic points against his opposition, as Michael Moore did in "Bowling for Columbine". I guess you really don't need to rely on propaganda and ambushing the disabled when you have facts & history on your side.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Important Film, August 9, 2005
Larry Elder takes a clear stance about the role of guns in a free society and backs it up with compelling evidence. Unlike other films that pretend to look at both sides fairly but lie and twist facts to get to their agenda, Larry gives it to you straight. If you really watch the film from start to finish, I believe you will find it a very worthwhile film filled with insightful and surprising ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eldertized by the sage man, viva la second amendment!, August 9, 2005
By Ryan R. Grant (Lancaster, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I just finished watching this and it is excellent. Larry Elder not only hosts a brilliant nationally syndicated talkshow, but he also has produced a top of the line documentary. Larry exposes Michael Moore's propoganda in bowling for Columbine, and demonstrates lucidly that the second amendment to the constitution guaruntees all of us the right to possess and USE guns, and how gun control laws are increasing crime all around the country. If guns are outlawed, then the bloody criminals are the ONLY ones with guns!!! Common sense?
No one can watch this movie (i mean actually watch it not just read the editorial review) and not oppose gun control, not to mention Michael two-dinners Moore's nonesense. 5 stars, I can't wait for the sequel!
