Biography

Staines, England's Hard-Fi feature Richard Archer (vocals), Ross Philips (guitar), Kai Stephens (bass), and Steve Kemp (drums). The punk-inspired indie rock quintet formed in 2002; they feature a brash mix of Dexy's Midnight Runners melodies, Franz Ferdinand hooks, and the theatrics of the Dead 60s. Hard-Fi self-released Stars of CCTV in October 2004, and all 500 copies quickly sold out. The U.K.… Read more in Amazon's Hard-Fi Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The first single from UK indie rock act raised on a diet of The Stones, Lee Perry, Curtis Mayfield, & Happy Mondays. Like The Streets had he chosen guitars, Dexys, & The Clash over samplers & Dre. Taken from the album Stars Of CCTV, the title track is backed with 'Sick Of It All' and the video for 'Cash Machine'. Atlantic. 2005. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars check it out, August 6, 2005

It's already midyear and we have another batch of new English bands to deal with. This time it's The Cribs, The Dead 60s and Hard-Fi. Some of these bands mix rock with ska, hiphop and punk and create new hybrids. Hard-Fi seem the most interesting of the bunch so far. They are true dole scum from Staines. They seem like the most urban. They seemed partly inspired by The Specials and The Clash. Like those bands they start out with rock and punk, and move on to a reggae vibe, and just come to the conclusion that they can do any sort of music, including dance music. "Cash Machine" has the mood of being alone. "Tied Up Too Tight" starts off with a hiphop sound and continues with rock drums. "Sick Of It All" is much like reggae dub and punk. They even do a version of "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes. It sounds like as if it was done by The Specials. This is an interesting band.

I just got back from seeing THE BRAVERY, where I picked up this CD (Hard-FI opened for them). The songs are awesome...this is a great ep, I hope they make a proper record soon and get rich and famous!!
